The 2008 Aquatic Gardener’s Association International Aquascaping Competition is online and available to view. Now although this competition is for freshwater planted aquaria, there are many more reef aquarists around the world than planted tank aquarists which brings to mind two questions. Why don’t we have a layout competition for reef aquariums and why don’t reefers put a little more effort in the layout of their tanks? Now granted, keeping a reef is hard enough that it is just more work to keep a layout in mind. However, it is possible to put together a nice nano reef within a year. What do we need to do as members of the reef aquarium community to get beyond the typical TOTM and get a national or global competition going?

That bottom tank is stunning. Can’t imagine how hard it is to maintain that, but its amazing.
I wish we could do a reef tank like that?
It’s possible, probably easy but we just need to hunker down and put some together. The closest we have are Japanese style reefs that some people are setting up.
Does anyone have any links to photos of “Japanese style reefs”?
I can’t point you to anywhere specifically but you can check out this post for a good example of Japanese style reefscaping.
