frag-inlay

We spied this new frag piece at the Midwest Frag fest in Rockford, Illinois. The piece which is actually two pieces is a clever way to entice encrusting corals to well do their thing, which is to crust up substrates. You mount the coral in the center plug, wait for the coral to grow over the plug and can either take the plug out by means of picking around the edges and giving it to your friends with a frag disk so they can enjoy the encrusting coral or you can just leave it be. Two of these reef disks come to a box and a box will run you a low $9 at Midwest Saltwater.

Finally, someone made a nice looking frag plug. Anything is better than the plastic thats become so popular.

I received a couple of these… they rock!

Great idea, and easier than drilling out live rock for the same purpose ;)

These are made by the Gooch, and my good reefing buddy Bill is the one behind Midwest Saltwater, so I have been using their stuff for some time now. Its a kiln-fired high-iron ceramic… much like the stuff coming from Germany. There are entire ‘frag station’ rocks which I was never a huge fan of myself (compared to eggcrate), but there are ‘do-nuts’ for mounting LPS in which are very useful, and clam mounting rocks as well which are very cool. If you want something custom, like tank background plates or something… give Bill a call. Good Stuff. The Wisconsin Reef Society members have been using this stuff for years… glad to see its catching on.

The above post is filled with innacurate statements. Yes The Alternative Reef makes the Big Uns. We also make Frag Stations, donuts plugs disks and a few other products. But we do not make clam holders or rock walls and have no immediate plans to do so. And we do not do custom work and have never done custom work.

Our clay is also a closely guarded secret that we do not share with anyone.

Jon, you have a prototype of something we have chosen not to make.
