Reef Central has been completely offline for quite some time today. It seems the site was fine around 7am CST today but a little after that time the site has been completely offline. So far we are going on the 6 hour of downtime, something that is very abnormal during a peak day time. Reefkeeping magazine has been out of commission since March and with today’s bulletin board failure, Reef Central’s future may be uncertain. We have no idea why Reef Central is down but if you are having withdrawals, feel free to have a look at the friendly and informative Reef Builders forums.

Update: Yes, they are down. No sign if they are ever going to be back up.

If they were doing an update, wouldnt they do it in the middle of the night? and I dont think it would take more than 2-3hrs. I guess we shall see.

Personally, I think the site has always been extremely slow. I think whomever is managing the site is skimping on quality servers.

Jake I think it is kind of funny too plus I think there would have been an announcement. But then a gain maybe there was, I do not visit the place like I used to.. But anyway A freind of mine that is a mod on there said they were rolling out a big update, so that is all I know.

RC guys say server issues and they have been working all day to get back up.

Thanks for the update melissa, maybe the update caused the server malfunction.

Hopefully they’re doing the long awaited software upgrade…

While I also enjoy R2R, I don’t think it’s fair to say it’s better. Because of the much larger member base on RC, there’s MUCH more information there…

  10. Posted July 15, 2009 at 3:57 pm | Permalink

A little competition can’t hurt. Competition keeps everyone on their toes. RC’s member count and information means nothing if they can’t support the traffic and content.

I agree RC is over rated. I did a whole lot for them in the clam forum. I even have 2 sticky’s there and they banned me for putting 2 links to another reef forum. If it isn’t in their best interest then they ban you. I have moved on and I hope many others see the light and do the same.

Wow, I JUST signed up for a premium membership last night so I’ll actually be able to search. Great timing on my part.

Isn’t that a load of crap? I don’t pay to search

  16. Posted July 15, 2009 at 6:57 pm | Permalink

I hope they are updating the antiquated forum software. Totally counter-intuitive at times and is so like 1997 ;) RC is nice because of its size but at times that can be the killer. So many other forums out there using more up-to-date software making it much easier to view and reply especially with links and text modifications.

Terrible system management if it was an upgrade. I’d lay odds they lost the database backend, which would contribute to extremely long down times. Besides, if it had been a planned outage, we would have seen the Maintenance message earlier this morning rather than the server time out messages. This was an unplanned event, possibly catastrophic in nature.

We now return you to your local forums…..

“RC is over rated” says all of the reef forum competitors… ;)

They are over rated. And yes I’m a competitor :) They charge their sponsors an exorbitant amount for sponsorship, their members a “premium” just to use the search function (if you can call it that lol), and for a new reefer to get a good answer from someone that knows what they are talking about is practically impossible. Most of the post now are just regurgitated fluff, thats if you even get a response.

I was a loyal participant of RC for years, a Team RC member, and have written for RK (what happened to that?)but dont go there now.

They have lost touch with the people.

I agree with chris 100% and several other people who have commented.

You either have to throw money at them, keep your valid [or should I say anything that doesn't benefit the bank holder or there sponsors] comments to yourself or don’t participate at all.

    Facists…

Sad to know this unexpected incident.
Hope they can be back to normal soonest.
They are not the best but definitely the biggest.

It has been confirmed. ReefCentral has lost all recovery files and the databases have been destroyed. We have no way of recovery any of these necessary items.

Reefcentral will be shut down indefinitely…

Sorry everyone, please do not send any emails inquiring about this issue, if and when we ever come back, believe me/us, you will know. I just thought I would let you all know so you don’t waste anymore time refreshing your browsers hoping for something that is not going to happen…

Sorry again and I wish everyone well…

I am completely shocked. The news of RC disappearing sounds just too incredible right now.

  31. Posted July 16, 2009 at 6:37 am | Permalink

Has anyone actually confirmed that they have actually closed the site? I was just on RC and a new message is up saying it will “back in a little while”.

  32. Posted July 16, 2009 at 6:44 am | Permalink

I am getting constant phone calls, there is really nothing we can do from here. Again, on behalf of everyone at RC, we are deeply sorry about this and we do wish everyone well.

By the end of the day the website will be updated with more information regarding what has happened along with a very long apology from our staff.

Isn’t beerguy a moderator? I think I know what withdrawls are like now. Plus I have no idea what I am going to do at work now. Hope they get things figured out quickly. Glad I .pdf’d a bunch of threads. This is a SAD day

  34. Posted July 16, 2009 at 7:15 am | Permalink

Wow, if RC is really dead then I need a new forum to my popular thread to! I pretty much used RC exclusively and dont know much about the other forums out there.

Same for me Sonny. RC was a way for me to show hobbyists in the US my tank and vise versa.

I am sorry to say, but this is in fact the truth. We are trying to decide whether or not to rebuild from here as we do still have some files for the site, but not anywhere close to get us back to where we were. Considering this is where most of the information has been distributed, we will again comment here later about our sponsors and the future of RC.

I have admired both of your tanks and will be disappointed if I cannot take cues from them for my next tank. i guess the search for a new forum continues.

  38. Posted July 16, 2009 at 7:33 am | Permalink

First, I would like to apologize to all of our members, sponsors and even our staff. We had a breach in our security systems, allowing easy access [by a hacker] to our very important files and database. Most of these items were either corrupted or completely deleted. We made the mistake of placing our back ups on the same server as which we operated the site on (yes, we know, a HUGE mistake).

As for our sponsors, as per our agreement [very similar to user agreement] in the event that something like this happens, unfortunately this is a issue and loss we must share. All sponsors who have paid up until down time will not be refunded. If you have yet to send your sponsorship dues, please do not, as once it is sent we cannot refund it. If you are setup on a subscription basis, please cancel subscriptions as soon as possible.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me and I will be more than happy to assist you as best as possible.

Once again, I would like to apologize for everything to everyone. Like BeerGuy has already stated, website will be updated with more information regarding the situation that has shut us down.

Regardless of whether you love or hate it as a forum, the sheer loss of information just beggars belief…..A very sad day for the online community. and a lot of linked threads across hundreds of other forums now suffer from this as well.
