Well it seems like some ill-meaning pranksters have been commenting on behalf of RC mods and admins and direct communication with beerguy has refuted the comments that were made and had this to say instead:
Someone who doesn’t want us competing with them fabricated those messages.
We did have a database issue but since we’re one of the few boards that does a nightly backup will be back later this morning, with almost zero data loss.
We are relieved to hear that Reef Central should be back online shortly and we sincerely regret to have been a part of this misinformation. Our comment system does not require for emails to be verified but it just goes to show that it is a sad fact that unless comments are verified and re-verified, it is impossible to believe what statements are made anymore. We sincerely apologize to the RC staff and RC users and we will do our best to be doubly diligent with information in the future.
Update: Posted over on Reef Central:
To the folks spreading rumors and making up quotes, it’s pretty sad when you have to resort to lying to try and get members.
The truth is that during an upgrade to mySQL we encountered an error that needed to be corrected. Unlike most sites, our database is very large and routine checks can take quite a long time to run. That’s one of the reasons why we’re one of the few sites that runs a full nightly backup. We’ll be back this morning with virtually zero data loss. Sorry to disappoint the folks forging the emails.
Update 2: Reef Central is back up.
Regardless of what rumor you’ve heard, we’re still here. We still have our database and we weren’t hacked.
If you’ve been paying attention to some of the talk about the board, we’ve been planning an upgrade for some time. On our archive site, the work is already complete and that has been our test site.
Yesterday, as a preliminary step to the upgrade, we upgraded our database software. The update fleshed out some table inconsistencies that the previous software version overlooked. Once those issues were resolved we had to update some SQL code because of a change in the way that some statements were being parsed by the new version.
Right now Searching has been disabled because that table is very large and it impeded checks that needed to be run. It’ll be returned to service as soon as things stabilize.
Thanks

YAY! I won’t have to tear down my system after all!
Thank God….i was really bummed out
haha that was a pretty good joke though.
GREAT news about the site being back today, i would have missed all that info and my threads.
I am glad that some people can take this prank in good humor, it still sucks people would behave this way.
Ahh, I love the taste or redemption
Like I said… it is hard to fathom that Doug (beerguy) and the other system admins would not have numerous valid backups to restore from. If the site WAS down for good, then it would have been due to something much larger (like the onwer shutting the site down by choice for one reason or another).
Use some basic logic here folks… During one of the large Florida storms, they were down for several days. They never posted a “were are out of business” message and weathered the storm (no pun) just fine. Even IF most of the data WAS lost, turning members away less than 24 hours into the ordeal, instead of trying to rebuild is a drastic step and an unlikely business decision.
lies I tell you.. Lies! LOL, funny how many people were upset about this and how many people were happy…. Maybe there is a lesson for RC in there. But you do not become the largest by being all bad.
Dave
Wow what a great way to advertise on other reef boards…just leave people in the dark and let them soread your name across the internet way to go RC free advertising hahahahaha
Great news! WOOOOOT!
LOL, that was pretty funny though. It would be a shame if all the data was lost.

It would not be lost..

I actually got that link off another site but I was thinking that was someother place like a mirror site but that is actually RC. Confused now.
Dave
I do like how RC posted this “Slander and libel are pretty serious things”
Even there “were ok” message is arrogant…
This could have all been prevented with a quick little html landing page saying something along the lines of we had a slight glitch and will be back as soon as possible! You know you have a problem going on and it isn’t going to be back up in 5 mins so inform us please!
I applaud Reef Builders for trying to keep us in the loop even if they were led down the wrong path by some foolios.
RC is back up! GO! GO! GO!
“it just goes to show that it is a sad fact that unless comments are verified and re-verified, it is impossible to believe what statements are made anymore”
I’m sorry but is this a joke?
You posted unverified information from a source you didn’t establish as credible and you don’t take responsibility for this?
It is indeed sad, but for a different reason than you conclude.
RC is back on-line!
RC should have prevented this… this downtime could have been prevented, regardless of the excuses given, (which are double talk intended to diffuse thier responsiblity/errors)
any upgrades could have been done on a different server or different directory on a mirrored site… then when everything was kosher, the dns could have been switched to the new and improved site, (but I would only expect limited improvement, until they replace the arrogant sobs that call themselves, ‘moderator’, (what an oxymoron as they are far from moderate)
I appreciate the info that can be found in RC, but that info can be found else where, or just in their reefkeeping magazine.
thier bad reputation that is expressed and shared by thousands, comes fromsome where… that many folks cant coincidentally form the sameopinion for the same reasons…
thier inablity to look at and address those issues means this planned ‘upgrade’ will not achieve a true UPGRADE
I hope RC takes responsibility and refunds/credits the sponsors for thier lost time in advertising, and the paid members. Not so much to cut into thier ‘bottom line’ (which by my estimates is in the millions) but rather to take the time to address and send individual accounting and credits to all the parties that have paid for RC service…
Um… Yeah sure so no one at RC ever heard of testing first before rolling out the changes into production? C’mon now… Even an IT greenie would know better than that. Time to take some accountibility for yourself guys… Just admit you f***d up and put forward some plans to prevent this from happening in the future.
Big deal if they did screw up in the process of upgrading the site. Let me guess, everyone on here is a saint and have never made a mistake….. People are acting as if the world ended because RC was not available for a short time. If you are that addicted to forums then you guys need your head examined. Yes, RC is the largest reef forum on the net by in my opinion it is one of the worse. The management of the site is way off base. It could be great but the site is too big for its own good.
Either way, big deal, it was unavailable for a little while….
Gary so true..
People need to get lives if they are ready to commit suicide over RC being down.
Find something else to do, Go to another reef site, go outside etc.
Stuff happens. I am part owner of a isp and stuff happens. Servers go down, software errors, backbone drops etc. Most things are out of your control. Who can say that every piece of software they have installed has worked right?
Dave
Dave very good point, “crap occurs” especially in the tech world where you are relying on a chain of technology. Just like any other thing, the more parts there are, the more points of possible failure/hiccups. Throw in Murphy’s Law and it gets all crazy.
Like I mentioned in my previous comment, just have a quick HTML landing page at the ready and point the address there in times of trouble. It goes a long way to head things like this off at the pass
Agree that hobbyist should get lives, nothing else to moan about.
