The filtration system to keep LiveAquaria up and running is amazing. There isn’t anything else that can compare that is selling livestock commercially. To give you an example of how big LiveAquaria is, they have 1200 fish in stock and over 10,000 corals and frags, all that livestock needs a powerful filtration system. Here they use RK2 protein skimmers and fluidized reactors that keep the water squeaky clean. Ultraviolet light is also used as a means of filtration and they have banks of these lighting units stacked up which looks like large artillery shells. The complete filtration system handles over 20,000 gallons of water and has a turnover of 10-15 times per hour. To see specific specs hit up the read link below.

Facility Overview

* Handling: (8) discreet systems with independent filtration
(3) dedicated fish systems (treatment, quarantine, and main)
(3) main coral holding rows
(1) SPS quarantine system
(1) LPS/Soft Coral/Invertebrate quarantine system

* Controller: RK2/Aquadyne automated system monitors pH, ORP, and Temperature; doses Kalkwasser; sends alerts if needed via mobile/email. Corrections can be made remotely via software.

  • 1st Opened: July, 2005
  • Renovation: $500,000 expansion project in Spring 2007, which more than doubled the size of the facility
  • Size: 20,000 gallons across eight discreet handling systems
  • Staff: 10 employees, working shifts year ’round
  • Power Backup: All system return pumps in the entire facility are hooked to an external Natural Gas power backup generator
  • Air Handling: Sealed building fed by two air handling systems maintaining humidity levels of below 50%, and a stable temperature of 76 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is the coral and fish water all connected though? I know sometimes (typically?) fish are kept at less than reef conditions to help treat against disease/pests/etc.

Of course not, what do you think this is? Petsmart or Petco?

Very neat however with 1200 fish wouldn’t they need more filtration? I assume this is not their complete filtration system?

I was there a couple years ago (posted a bunch of pics on RC and wrs forums). That skimmer actually sucks… big time. The skimmers many hobbyists use on 180g tanks skim better than that thing. They also use ozone on that thing. About the only cool thing about that big useless RK is that it has a pH/ORP meter on it.

On the other hand, the huge Schuran Ca Reactor that they use is pretty cool.
