GHL/Profilux has dropped their point of entry for their controller. Normally a beginner pack would cost you a cool $599 but not any longer. A new price point has been established right at $489 which saves you over 20%. We don’t know if this is the result of the economy or the fact that there is so much stock floating around the United States, but if your over there in Europe reading this you might think about importing a unit to take advantage of the lower point of entry and marginal exchange rate. No complaints here on the lower price, we just want more information on their new ProfiLux III model. You reading GHL?

That lighthouse pro controller that we saw at Macna has gotten a fresh revision to its firmware. 2.0 is now out and you can expect to have some bug fixes and new features. Although we haven’t had a chance to play with one of these yet on our tank, some users have reported that they really are happy with this pro controller. With all the competition from controller companies including Digital Aquatics, Aquatronica, Elos, GHL, and Neptune systems to name a few its amazing that all these companies can stay in business. We haven’t seen any company completely corner the market…yet. Below you can read about the new firmware update to 2.0.

Bug Fixes:
1) Settings Web page had outlet numbers displayed wrong.
2) Cycle Timer Run Time and Contacts setup did not work correctly when set from the Setup Outlets Web page.
3) Various cosmetic issues in Outlet Setup, Set Options, and Alarms/Limits page.

New Features:
1) Feed Time, Maintenance Timeout, and Manual Timeout can now be specified up to 24 hours.
2) Minor performance enhancements in Web page download times, and IR remote keypress response.

The new module which allows your ReefKeeper elite to go surf the internet is said to be released soon. We first reported this module back in May. The $119 entry price will get you a single bus controller and you’ll have the option to purchase additional hardware outside of Digital Aquatics to make the Reefkeeper elite wireless. Which means that if you have wireless in your home, you’ll be able to turn off your aquarium lights one hour early so the kids can play hide and go seek properly while your on the couch watching tv. Say that isn’t beautiful. This module will be released soon.

There seems to be a never ending supply of aquarium logging software out on the market. A new program called aquarium lab or Dr. Aquarium works with standard X10 home automation modules, and can measue pH, Temperature, Light Levels, Sound Levels, and other parameters using a DAQ board. The program features email alerts, a scripting language, and a web interface that lets you monitor you aquarium over the internet. That’s actually quite a lot of things for this $39 piece of software to do.

Not that you wouldn’t love your Profilux aquarium controller to control your loved vortech, oh no you would never want that. Would you know that GHL and Ecotech marine “have been in talks for the past 3 years” in using technology so that they play nice together? 3 years is an awfully long time, to long for anything to bear fruit. Seems one company or another doesn’t want to give up technology for the two to communicate together. Your going to have to petition EcoTech Marine and GHL about them hooking up. Anything is possible right?

Well what do we have here? Seems Digital Aquatics has been busy working on bug fixes for the Reef Keeper Elite, thats not all though. Their new PH probe has been released which will replace the standard probe that was bundled with their Reef Keeper controllers. The new probe which has a resolution of 0.01 pH comes with the necessary calibration packets that you’ve come to expect in a standard PH probe. Like most other PH probes on the market it uses a male BNC connection to communicate with your controller. The price for all of this? $37. Now say that isn’t beyond reasonable, we will take two please.

GHL, the guys that bring you the Profilux have just confirmed that they are hard at work at their newest model to be named the GHL Profilux III. We don’t have specifc details on when the product will be close to a release date, its a long time from that even. We do know that it will be backwards compatiable with current hardware in the Profilux II systems. Straight from the horses mouth: “Everything that currently works on, or you can purchase now for the profiLux II will work with the profiLux III (backward engineering/compatibility)”.
Turns out that Reef Keeper Elite might have been released too soon. Or at least thats what some owners are saying. With a horde of bug problems with the Reef Keeper Elite one owner had this to say: “As far as bug fixes and new modules, it’s a waiting game played a company w/ 3 employees who do the day-to-day support, sales and PayPal accounts receivables. Forget getting a refund at this point, another user was angrily informed that he’s stuck with the unit & the thread was shut down [on their support site]“. Ouch that is pretty tough. It makes you wonder if they should have increased the testing/beta stage of the unit before releasing it to the public. There is always this unit and this one to consider for your aquarium controller. Both are out of the $490 price bracket the Reef Keeper Elite is at, but both manufacturers claim no bugs, or at least that is what Profilux is preaching.
