H2Ocean Pro+ is a new pro formula aquarium salt - produced by a solar evaporative process which produces a totally natural base salt where all of the main and trace elements and are in complete balance as nature intended.

Spectrum Brands, Inc. the company that owns Marineland and brings you Instant Ocean by the container load released a new skimmer under their Instant Ocean Brand. Say hello to the “skimm” line. (really marketing guys over there, could you not think of a better name, protein skimmer would be better in our humble opinion.) The Instant Ocean Skimm range consists of 4 models: Skimm 400, 800, 1200, and 1600. No word on when the US release date is set, but this has hit the UK, we can only assume when this skimm line will hit the US shores. Interesting to note that these are manufactured in Italy, all skimmers use needlewheels to give you that extra boost in bubble production.

New research shows that the second most diverse group of hard corals first evolved in the deep sea, and not in shallow waters. Stylasterids, or lace corals, diversified in deep waters before launching at least three successful invasions of shallow water habitats in the past 30 million years. This finding contradicts a long-established theory that suggests corals and other marine animals all evolved in shallow water before migrating into deeper habitats.

Current has this nifty little filter system call the subcurrent surface skimming filter. This is perfect for a 10 gallon nano or as I was personally thinking about a quarantine tank. Set this filter in your tank, it has nice surface skimming action, the usual filter media types: carbon, filter floss, more carbon and biomedia balls. You can grab this guy online or through your favorite local fish store.

The experts at ATB released a new hang-on-back protein skimmer. Based off the cone design for their in-sump systems. This new skimmer grants you the power of having a ATB skimmer without needing a sump. Details are very scarce but they are using a hagen powerhead, bubbleplate to reduce turbluence (yey) and a custom meshwheel. Pricing has not been announced, but we imagine this being above $400 easily. Now, if Euro-reef would just get their act together and confirm the rumors of their hang-on-the-back protein skimmer.

JBJ isn’t sitting still while the Red Sea max arrives at the home of thousands of new reef builders. Say hello to the beautiful 28 gallon nano aquarium, featuring among other things: Metal halide aquarium lighting, protein skimmer, and a wavemaker! Would have thought to include that? An actual wavemaker? Not to mention a 150 Watt HQI metal halide! Wow! Don’t fret with the thought of heating your tank up, they added 4 fans to cool the lighting down. Still I am a bit uneasy with a 150 watt enclosed metal halide beaming down on 28 gallons of saltwater. The protein skimmer is counter current (aka you need to replace the air stone every few months, booo!). We feel that the moding community will fix this problem. It seems JBJ continues the tradition of annoying us serious reefers by including a form of bio balls. Regardless of the possible heat issues, protein skimmer and bio ball addition, we will take two please.

Designed as either a hang on or in sump model the new Aquac Medic Turboflotor “blue” line of protein skimmer is sure to get you all foamy. This skimmer is rather large at a footprint of 14” x 7”. About the size of a Euro Reef RC 80 skimmer.
