Euro Reef introduced a new type of nano skimmer for the market to purchase, instead of the usual one pump setup, Euro Reef went one step further and stuffed another pump into their nano skimmer making it a dual pump Nano Skimmer, the first company to market. There are two models currently available one that fits the Red Sea MAX 130/34g aquarium and another that fits the Cadlights Pro 39g aquarium. The Red Sea Max model has the pumps on opposite sites while the Cadlights nano skimmer has them on the same side. The Cadlights pro version uses a molded bracke which allows the skimmer to join the nano aquarium while the Red Sea Max model has a unique brace which sits on the RSM chamber and adjusts skimmer body height. Thankfully, both models use Euro Reef’s new mesh wheel, there are rumors that the Red Sea Max version will see a slight revison to the pump direction, we don’t have any pricing information yet but you can check out the gallery below for even more juicy tidbits.

Update: Craig points out that we are blind, and the Cadlights pro model will retail for $168 and Red Sea max $189. Thanks Craig!

While spying out the new gear at MAX this weekend we got a second look of the Euro Reef alloy mesh wheel but the first OK to take photos of the mythical being. As you can see from the image above, the alloy mesh material Euro Reef uses to make their mesh wheel is unlike anything we’ve seen or used before in a protein skimmer. Along with the Royal-Exclusiv mesh wheel, as far as we know this is the only other mesh wheel made from metal. The unusual material looks like a foundation of metal wire which has been dipped in metallic paint so that some of the openings of the wire are actually filled in with the alloy material. The highly irregular texture and surface of the Euro Reef alloy mesh wheel appears as if it could produce highly turbulent flow patterns resulting in very small water bubbles. The production of very numerous and small bubbles in the Euro Reef Nano skimmers we have seen in operation seem to reflect this assumption. Have a look for yourself in the detailed photo gallery below.

We finally got a picture of Euro Reef’s new alloy meshwheel. The blurry picture doesn’t tell us much, but we do know that Euro Reef is experimenting with a new type of glue. The older glue that they used didn’t work as well in the field as it did in their labs, so at least another one month delay as they find another glue that can withstand the reality of field skimming. It would be nice to get a close up shot to the meshwheel as we would love to compare it to some other meshwheels we have seen but alas they say patience is a virtue.
Depending on who you talked to you might have heard any one of several rumors floating around the industry. Back in late 2007 and early 2008 Euro Reef decided to only ship to brick and mortar stores with a MAP (Minimum advertised price). Along with that there are now two divisions of the company, Euro Reef aquariums systems and Euro Reef Nano systems. Euro Reef also relaunched their website with a much needed refresh and new look. One new product to be on the lookout for is their new nano media reactors which will be sure to be a popular and instant hit. We aren’t sure we agree with the branding strategy of only selling to LFS (local fish stores) but we will see if that strategy works for them as 2009 pans out. Be sure to visit the new site to take advantage of the clearance sale they are having on many legacy products. You can click the read link below for the full press release.

EURO-REEF, INC. RE-LAUNCHES BRAND IN NORTH AMERICA

Euro-Reef is back and better than ever; poised to regain their seat as the world’s premier manufacturer of saltwater aquarium filtration products.

In 2007 Euro-Reef decided to implement a unique business model that focused on the retail bricks & mortar Local Fish Store (LFS) and pulled their products from all online retailers. The new model also called for the closure of all distributor accounts in North America. Although their products have remained available to the LFS and qualified aquarium design/service professionals, the exposure of the brand suffered due to some confusion regarding 2008’s January Press Release. “It was a tough decision, but we knew it was time to make a change and the choice to support the LFS exclusively was a key component of our new model.” says VP Jeff Macaré. The VP says that they took the time to evaluate where the brand stood in the market place and to determine the best way to provide quality products to the Local Fish Stores. “Our product belongs in the LFS.” Macaré said, “A potential Euro-Reef customer needs to see the quality of our product first hand. They also need expert advice, and they get that at their LFS.”

The company continues to enforce a Minimum Advertising Price (MAP) policy. In order to serve hobbyists that cannot buy Euro-Reef products in their area, products may be purchased directly from the new Euro-Reef web site at the MAP. “This,” Macaré says, “ensures that there is no online competition for our LFS dealers. The product is just for them and no other manufacturer is offering them that.”

This philosophy, Jeff Macaré says, is the way of the future for this unique industry. “The LFS is under more pressure than ever before and as they are the backbone of the entire hobby, it is devastating to see the numbers and rate at which they are going under. We as manufacturers have to take a close look at that and realize that every store that closes takes a lot of potential/future hobbyists with it. I think that manufacturers have been favoring giant PO’s from giant online dealers for far too long and the damaging effects can be seen quite clearly in our industry.”

Last year in 2008 we mentioned that Euro Reef was working on an alloy meshwheel of sorts. Back then, we thought like most people do that when a company says their working on something that they will release it. Fast forward 4 months and we received word that Euro Reef has delayed their Alloy meshwheel project. Reasons for this include “The testing is taking longer than we had originally hoped and we aren’t going to rush them to market.” We suppose that is good, but when will our alloy meshwheel needs be filled Euro Reef? Will there be a needlewheel option as well?

Now that 2008 is officially behind us we decided to put together a list of the most searched for reef equipment items of 2008. For those of you who don’t know, the more an item is searched for the more popular that product is. If this post proves popular then we might make this a Reef Builders annual tradition. So without further ado, we give you the Reef Builders Top 5 most searched for reef equipment products of 2008.

#5 Euro Reef nano skimmer

One of the biggest complaints about a nano aquarium is a poor functioning nano protein skimmer. Euro reef decided to capitalize on the modding trend by releasing several models of their nano skimmers to the public. Each model is a different size and footprint allowing you to pick a model thats right for your tank. With these nano skimmers starting at only $98.00, Euro Reef makes it easy to upgrade your nano aquarium.

#4 Hydor Koralia Magnum

Hydor was put on the map quickly in early 200y with the release of their Koralia line. A simple pump design based of the highly efficient prop technology that is used in many boating applications made its way over to aquariums across the world at a reasonable price point. One of the many complaints though on the original Koralia’s was the slower GPH flow rates. Seeking to address this issue, Hydor came our with the Magnum line of Koralias which greatly increased flow. The Hydor Koralia Magnum model 5 pushes 1850 GPH using only 8 watts. The Hydor Koralia Magnum model 6 pushes 2200 GPH using sipping 10 watts. The Hydor Koralia Magnum model 7 pushes 2700 GPH while using 12 watts and finally the Hydor Koralia Magnum model 8 pushes water at 3250 GPH while eating up 19 watts. Pricing starts at $130, which isn’t the cheapest but still a fair amount for a respectable pump.

#3 Aquatic Life HID lighting Unit

We will admit we were a little blindsided by this new aquarium manufacturer that came out of nowhere. Aquatic life when from 0 to having numerous products in which the modern aquarist can choose and pick from. Of those new products the HID lighting unit proved to be the most popular. Taking a page out of European and Japan standards these lighting units were based of the principle that you didn’t have to illuminate your entire reef aquarium but instead you only illuminated a “spot” in which the vast amount of the light would be directed and then from there it would become less intense, something that the Japanese and Germans have been doing for quite some time now. There are of course T5’s included in these lamps, the 36″ model and the 72″ model each get 3 39 watt T5’s while the 48″ model gets 2 54 watts. The 36″ model carries a retail of $599 the 48″ model $799 and the 72″ model $1199.

#2 Elos system mini

elos-system-mini-family

Some of the most beautiful cars in the world are designed by Italians, its in their blood. Carrying over are Elos entire line of aquarium “systems”, while having mostly largely systems Elos did not have a nano aquarium in which to target the nano market. Along came the Elos Mini aquarium which was unveiled in Germany at Interzoo 2008. The Elos system mini is beautiful to say the least, with Elos sparing no expense in which to craft and make this new system. Featuring an LED light and full sump system, rumors abound that Elos spent over 3 years working on the LED system alone for heat placement. Users report the LED lighting system transmits very low amounts of heat to the top of the aquarium while the bulk of the heat is projected on the top of the unit. However, with all these cool features comes a price, the entire system, including pool cube, stand, sump including pumps and protein skimmers will set you back $1599. Ferrari’s aren’t cheap, nor are Lamborghini’s…Elos sadly isn’t an exception.

#1 Red Sea max 250

The most anticipated new product of 2008 was no doubt Red Sea’s Max 250 aquarium. The max 250 is the max 34 big brother both in size and equipment. The Max 250 was also introduced at Interzoo 2008 in Germany and and highly regarded as a nice replacement for customers wanting an all in one unit that wasn’t a nano but not a truly large system. The Max 250 delivered on that customer whim by displacing 65 gallons, finally a system that is “all in one” that isn’t a nano. The Red Sea Max 250 will be available in black, silver or white. It comes with 6×39 watt T5 lighting, which equals to 236 watts of total lighting. Built in fans and lights are controlled with the T5’s lights via a nice digital timer. Dual aquarium pumps which produce about 15x aquarium turnover at 3600 lph (950 GPH). Comes with all the mechanical, biological and chemical stages as the original red sea max. There will be a chiller kit available soon and the stand will be able to easily accommodate this. Expect the power center to be the same as the smaller model with one cord going to the main socket. Red Sea had problems getting this aquarium to market, when it was released in 2008 the German market (of all places) snapped this model up so much that other areas of the world suffered as a result from no stock levels. The United Kingdom got a Winter 2008 release date and the United States is rumored to have a early 2009 official release date although there are some select (read: like 1) distributor in which you can pick this model up from. Retail price is said to be around $1499.
This nano skimmer will fit a CAD pro 39 aquarium (sump) model and has begun shipping for $168. Euro reef? Did you forget to include silencers for this bad boy? It’s like you want to drive us all crazy or something.

Nano aquariums have become increasingly popular with the onslaught of the current world economy. Their much smaller, taking up less space and using less resources like extra salt, testing agents and energy. If you yourself started to scan all the nano aquariums available on the market you could be quickly overwhelmed. Apparently, Euro Reef has realized this and has planned to release a different nano skimmer per nano aquarium, so let’s say you have a JBJ nano aquarium or even an Aquapod nano aquariums and you want a Euro Reef skimmer to power that. No problem. They have a skimmer for you. Like our earlier coverage of Euro Reef’s latest at Reef-a-Palooza suggests this is the direction they are taking. We just wish they would hurry up and released ‘em all already. Rumored pricing is less than $130, let’s hope that holds true.
