I walked into view my 45G reef tank to see the temperature close to 33degrees C (about 90F i think), i quickly took the lid off and put a few ice bags in, along with turning off most power heads, the T5's and the hang on skimmer (attached powerhead). Im reducing the temp slowly to try and reduce this potentially disastrous problem. My question is, what are the methods of cooling in a closed hood unit, or better yet preventing the heat generation in the first place? I'm only running 2 T8's, and 2 T5s (plus a few LEDs), so the heat produced isn't that high, and I'm guessing that is must have been the powerheads(running 3), however the source of the rapid heat rise is making me increasing anxious, as it's currently only 26celcius (79F) and looking to rise to closer to 40C.

Any help would be most appreciated,

One of the worse things you did was turn off circulation in the tank. Circulation helps with gas exchange and pointing a power head toward the surface will bring in required oxygen. If you don't have a sump to attach a fan on to blow air into the sump water, you will have to use house air conditioning and hood fans.
