What is the stand made of - wood, particle board??? If it's wood you could possibly strip the finish using a water based stripper. However getting all the black out of the grain will be difficult. Probably best to lightly sand it & paint it another color. Be careful not to suck in any paint fumes into the tank. Turn off skimmer or anything else that sucks air into the tank.
