The rust colored stuff could be diatoms. Those are part of the cycling process.

What do you use for a filter? I also reccommend one of the magnetic algae scrapers to keep your glass clean.

Bristletooth Tangs and some of the other species of tang eat hair algae. My lawnmower blenny also eats the algae off the glass.
