Default Newbie thinking of a Nanocube 12g

I figured I'd start here rather than the nano tank thread.

I'm thinking about trying out a marine tank. I don't have much experience so far with saltwater, but I have cared for quite a few successful freshwater tanks.

Anyway, now I'm living in a small apartment, in an old building, and I don't want a huuuuge tank. (not to mention my college student budget.) So I've been considering the nanocube 12g tank. My problem is that I've been hearing conflicting opinions as to whether or not this is a good idea for a beginner. I would really like to start out with LR and fish.

And one other non related question that popped up: RO/DI water? Is that something I have to buy, or can I use one of those filter things you can get for your faucet?

Thank you in advance!
