Lots of people use MightyMite RO/DI and are very happy with it. I have one from Abundantflow (got it off e-bay) and it works fine. There are several ways of hooking them up. Many will attach to a your sink spiout or to a hose spigot etc..
As for losing snails, I bought 6, and think I still have all 6 - I have lots of lr so can't always see them. Are you sure they are dead or just hiding?
