Pleco can correct me, but I've been reading more on a little on cannister filters. You can use a cannister, but its suggested to remove the filter media and if possible use LR rubble. IIUC this can avoid a cannisters nitrate problem.
But deffinately find a good skimmer.
To add to his list, stay away from crushed coral.
