Many people have successfully kept a reef tank without using a skimmer. If that is what you would like to do, then be sure to religiously do water changes. Also, if you have a low bio load you could probably get by without one. Protein skimmers remove many of the dissolved contaminants that are in the water. If it were me, I'd use a skimmer. You'd be surprised at the amount of smelly gunk they they remove.
