You can close it up and it will be quieter but good ventilation is very important too. Usually we have several pumps and other equipment that creates heat which needs a way to escape. Also a larger opening in the back of the stand makes it easier to run plumbing and wires. I have a 4" slot across the back of my stand and keep a 5" fan running 24/7.
