Re: Replacing bio balls ? how long has your 29gallon been up and running with the bio balls? my 29gal cube has been running for over a year with the bio balls. i thought about replacing them about 4-5 months after i had it up and running but then i was afraid i would upset the balance of the tank and create a nitrate/ammonia spike and kill some stuff.
i am gonna start making my own filter cartridges...gonna buy some of that pond filter sponge media, stick it into the 1st chamber and drop a media bag with some charcoal in it into the chamber as well..its gotta be better and cheaper than paying $7 for 2 cartridges. they say you only need to change them out 1 time a month but i replace my cartridge every week when i do my 5-6 gallon water change...they get so nasty.
