Since you brought it up...I would definitely switch to a finer substrate. In addition to the biological benefits, I think it will be much more pleasing to the eye. You shouldn't need epoxy unless you really want to build some seriously abstract formations. IMO, the more surface area of your LR that is exposed, the better.
