An interesting dilemna, Elliot -- your all-in-one project sounds wonderful and expensive. On the other hand, what would be the focus of the tank. Maybe I'm a bit 2 dimensional, but transition zones are gradual and 100 gal seems small. I liked your "looped" idea better. Each tank has a single focus and within that focus is a myriad of life (somewhat) interdependent on each other. By interconnecting the system you've created increased volume and a more stable environment. In fact, my better half was bitten by the saltwater bug and wants to set up a "primative" nano tank. It's going to take a lot of research to set this little microcosm up and balance it.
