My clown fans the sand all day every day. he's not looking for food don't know why he does it. he does in pretty much the same 3 areas, to the point that i can see the glass under the sand, and got about a 3" bed. you said up & running a few weeks? have you cycled? if not might as well keep them in there and create bio-load for cycle, just don't get too attached cause there's a chance they won't make it through the spike.
