I just think that with water evaporation, like I have I add 3-5 gallons of water every week. I just don't think changing your water that often is a must, and why? stress out your fish and corals with that many water changes, as long as your water parimaters are in check, why? fix something that is not broken. e_baer, please know that this is no disrepect to you or anyone else that does regular water changes like that, just curious really as to why? so many water changes.

No disrespect taken! We all have different tanks and set ups and we all find what works for our own tank. I say every 1-2 weeks because he does not have a skimmer and has an algae problem. The algae problem to me means that there is an excess in nutrients. These water changes will help lower those nutrients by removing the old water and adding fresh new water. Agreed that too much of a water change can be detrimental, but a 10-20% weekly or biweekly should not unless you have EXTREMELY picky corals or you do not mach the SG temp, alk, ph, etc. Water changes help replenish lost minerals from skimming, and just basic use from the aquarium animals.

You may have good parameters, but unless you dose all the trace elements in which there are over 70 of them, a water change is a great idea.

I used to do what you did too and my corals would not grow very fast. Now I do a 20% every 2-4 weeks, dependong on how busy I am and my corals are growing all over the place.
