I'll second that from WorkingMan. What is your setup like - filter ? skimmer ? volume ?

I also use the "nose" test as well as checking my water parameters. Your tank should smell like a "sunny day at the beach" Watch out for any smell like garbage or rotten eggs. You should see ammonia start in a few days.
