You can put one or two critical pieces of equipment (one powerhead and one heater in the winter) plugging into a non-GFCI outlet while you are on vacation or, better yet, have them plugged into separate GFCI outlets on different circuits.

The Rio issues are supposed to be fixed and Rios website even says new and improved (or something like that), but only time will tell if they are really fixed.
