1-2 lbs per gallon is a guideline. If you have more porous rock it will be lighter and larger than if you have more dense rock which will be smaller and heavier. Try to look for the most porous type of rock you can get. The nitrifying bacteria reside on the hard surface areas in our tanks so the more porous the more surface area and the more biofiltration you will have.
