Default Does a Clown Need a Mate?

I just recently had one of my clownfish commit suicide, if you will, by jumping out of the tank in the middle of the night. My other clown has since stuck to the top of the tank. He will take a "troll" around the tank briefly, but prefers to hang out at the top left corner of the tank. I remember my fish girl telling me that clowns survive better as pairs. However, when I talked to another employee yesterday, he stated that introducing another clown is risky as one will kill another off as quick as 30 seconds. Yet, if I introduce one that's almost the same size as the other one, it could work
What do I do? I feel so bad for my lil guy thats left. Is he ok on his own? Does he need a mate?

Nicole,
Sorry to hear about your fish carpet surfing. No, clowns do not need mates.

I agree with Deb. If you were to buy two clowns at the same time, it is no big deal. You add one later to the mix and then there is potential for a whoopin. How long have you had the clowns?

If you do buy another clown, buy one that is smaller than the current one. If the clownfish are any type besides for perculas, they will more than likely fight for a couple days until the dominant clown prevails. Once that is decided, they very often will get along just fine. Until the dominant clown is decided though, watch your carpet for a flopping fish.

I had them for a couple months, seemed like all was well. Other clown seems to be doing better. I'm just hesitant to by a new one because of fighting. I don't want anything to happen to the one I have now.
