Looks like it could be a sebae as mentioned, but IMO it looks to be dyed. Not good. I could be wrong, but..........

If it is dyed, the best treatement is pristine water conditions. It will eventually lose the dyed color if it is in fact dyed, but survival in the long term isn't guaranteed.

That's just my $.02.

when you say DYED...do you mean someone actually took a white anenome and added some kind of coloring to the water and dyed it a different color to sell it for more money? if so, i didnt know you could dye your anenomes...i wish my white long tentacle anenome was a different color...white is so boring..although the maroon clownfish shows up very nicely inside of it. so did my blue hippo when i noticed he was inside the anenome near the base being digested!!!! dang!!!!!

Dying is a very cruel practice that some distributors partake in. They do it in order to make the corals/anemones look more attractive and call them "rare" when really all they've done is taken a common species and put it through an abundance of trauma that will in all likelihood decrease its life span.

man, what kind of dye could you use that would actually change the color of a living thing? i would be pissed if i bought something and a couple weeks later it just changed color...the LFS and i would have to a sanctioned match inside the octagon...knees to the head allowed!!!

I don't know if it looks like it is dyed to me. The tank looks like it probably has a lot of actinic lighting in there so the anemone may appear more purple in the pic than it does in real life.

Regarding dying corals (or fish) - it is a really bad thing. Many times the corals don't survive or the buyer end up with an ugly brown coral (or fish), 6 months after buying a very bright coral. Yes, some fish (usually freshwater) are dyed/injected w/ color as well. If you ever see a dyed coral or fish, don't buy it and tell the store manager that they shouldn't be selling dyed livestock and to put a warning sign up to notify other potential buyers that the livestock is dyed.

I worked in a saltwater only LFS from bout 10-6 years ago. We stopped carrying the sebae anemones because so many of the colored ones were artificially colored. At some point in the distribution chain someone was soaking them in foodcoloring dyed water, mostly yellow or purple. The food coloring itself doesnt physically harm the anemone, but it does prevent photosynthesis by blocking the animals ability to absorb light properly so dying does significantly decrease the animals life expectancy.

From those pics its hard to tell if its artificially colored or natural.
