*_Sept.30_* Shook some detritus out of the chaeto and cleaned the fuge sponge a few times. Skimmer at 15%. Large hermit molted. Turned over the surface of the substrate. Dosed 0.8mL VSV. Noticed there is no protein at the surface of the display. Fed flake only.

*_Oct. 01_* Tested some parameters. Phosphate 0.1 ppm, Nitrate 0ppm, Nitrite 0ppm, Calcium 460. Didn’t feed. Didn’t dose VSV. Felt sick

*_Oct. 02_* Fed 2 blood worms. Noticed some protein on the display surface. Cut VSV dose back to 0.6mL. Some of the GSP frags aren’t opening. Cleaned the fuge sponge several times. Turned the skimmer up

*_Oct. 03_* Fed 3 bloodworms. GSP frags are all fully open again. No protein on the display surface. The skimmer is overflowing slightly. Turned it down a little. There’s tons of crap in the fuge; chaeto, red cyano, bubbles?. I kinda want to sterilize the sump. Bubble coral is probably 75% recovered. Of the Sinularia and hammer coral, the prior seems to be winning. Some of the hammer’s polyps seem elongated towards the edges.

*_Oct.7_* Despite the lapse in documentation, I have fed 3 cubes and dosed 0.6mL VSV daily. Some other minor maintenance was also performed. Did not feed today. Instead scrubbed the sump of cyano and Installed a 600GPH pump in the refugium for circulation, it seems to be working well at keeping detritus from collecting on the surface of the chaeto . Emptied the skimmer on Oct. 04. Also emptied today. Lightly scrubbed the LR of hair algae, which has grown a lot in the last 3 days. Added a green (metallic?) mushroom, used a razor blade to remove it from its original rock which had bryopsis and playanthids present. Also removed a Ricordia from a Fiji rock and discarded the rock. Removed a branch of Sinularia that was causing the hammer to recede on one side. Also turned over surface of substrate.

*_Oct. 8_* The mushroom added yesterday did not stay in its crack. It’s on the sand now. Neither did the Ricordia. It’s MIA. Fed 3 cubes. Dosed 0.6mL VSV. Skimmer 50%, slightly wet.

*This is the begining of my documentation. It is being posted as public record so I nor you will make the same mistake twice. It will be interesting to see my own progression in this hobby.*

*_Sept. 27_* Skimmer is producing green. Dosed 0.6mL VSV. Fed flake, 1 beefheart and 1 bloodworm. Bumped Powerhead, glass bottom exposed in center. Turned on lights 1pm. No fuge light. Cleaned glass, had white film, most likely bacterial from VSV(day 3 dosing).
*_Sept. 28_* Fed only flake food, looks like I’ve over fed a bit. Turned on Refugium light after several days of only a supplemental light. Emptied skimmer which was about 60% full, an increase from about 15% yesterday. Polyp expansion is incredible, the bubble coral seems to be expanding rapidly. The hammer has much more green than it did in its mother tank. Increased the VSV dose to 0.8mL.
*_Sept. 29_* Fed small amount of flake, one bloodworm and one beefheart. No change in diatom growth on the sand bed. Noticed a single polyp of the smallest GSP I fragged has opened. Bubble in the siphon again. The cabinet was very warm and humid. Skimmer at 10%. Dosed 0.8mL VSV.

I have a 155 saltwater reef tank. Sailfin Tang, Power Blue Surgeon, Copperband, two black clowns, two naked clowns, 7 blue green chromis, two bangai cardinals, one purple dottyback, lawnmower blenney, and one neon cleaner fish. 4 fire shrimp, 2 peppermint shrimp, lots of snails, and 4 emerald crabs.

I looked yesterday under a cave live rock and there appears to be a swarm of some microscopic something swimming madly around? What could this be?

Clown Fish

I have a 155 gallon saltwater aqauarium, 3 months old. We started with two black clown fish who were tank raised and no anemone. We added a RBT anemone that they never went to it. We just added two naked clowns and a GBT anemone. The naked clowns shared the anemone and the black clowns would visit and never attacked them and would always return to the other side of the tank. Now the naked clown kicked the other naked clown out of the anemone. We got another ivory bubble tip anemone and the kicked out clown went to it. The one naked clown kicked it out of it too. He swims back and forth and only lets the other clown in at night. What is happening???

The black clowns swim all over although in the last couple days one just kind of stays up and down along the edge and only swims around once in awhile???

Help - thanks.

I am new to the salt water world. i set up a tank and most is going well, levels of ammonia and nitrate are minmal and salinity looks good on a hydrometer. I visited a store and bought live rock and live sand, about three days later I am noticing a white cloudy substance sitting on the bottom next to a large rock where i buried a large piece of frozen brine, is this normal or the beggining of a problem?

Hello everyone,
My first blog/post....but I wanted to share some pics of my tank (150) that I have owned for about 4 years now. It has been geat and the best hobby I could invest in. I do have a question that I would appreciate some help with...and that is nitrates....I never had a problem until recently and nothing seems to work....its affecting my invertebrates and I have lost a couple of stars, shrimp, etc...also whenever I add snails they seem to last for about 1 week.....everything else, as you can see is doing ok, but Im sure can be doing better....I apprecate responses....

I have a 14 gallon bio cube that I have had for about a month now and when I turned the lights on this morning the cooling fan made a weird noise. Has this happened to anyone else? How long do I have before the fan goes out on me and where can I get some new ones?
Thanks

Recently getting back into the hobby after a 10 year absence. Obviously technology has changed, and I have much to catch-up on. Have a 110 gal reef tank with a Oceanic Trickle filter and a protien skimmer. Recently purchased a Tunze wave box and am wondering if I should go with the Tunze 6100 power heads or if I could go with the Vortech pumps. Am willing to spend the extra $ on the Vortech if they will work with the Wavebox, or will I get the same results with the Tunze power heads? Thanks

Hello- name's Aaron and I just started a 46 gallon bow-front tank on the 17th of October last year and was looking for a good outlet for advice, guidance and sharing. I don't ask too many questions though- am very set on trying things on my own rather than relying on others to walk me through it. For the most part I have many things in my tank that I just don't know how to identify and hopefully there are answers out there.

I Really, really enjoy Marine life and never get tired of watching it.

Hopefully this is the place to meet individuals with the same enthusiasm for this hobby as I have.

HELLO EVERYBODY:
I have a problem with my fish and if anyone can help me out that will be great and highly appreciated.
So here is my problem...
I have a yellow tang that’s getting this weird red rash looking thing on one side of his body. It started on his pectoral fins and gills then later spread to his face, stomach and dorsal fin . Does anyone know what it is and how i can get rid of it?
Here’s the story...
I bought 20 hermit crabs, a curlycue Anemone, a foxface and a copperband Butterfly. I did the whole acclimation like i did to all my other healthy fish but things started to go wrong when i added these guys to my tank. The copperband died with in a week. Half of the hermit crabs were eaten by the yellow tang (that is what i thought the problem was that he ate too much crab. But i don’t know for sure). my ph dropped to 7.8, My nitrite went up to 0.25, my nitrate went up to 40, and my ammonia went up to 0.25 all with in a week. I changed the water and now my foxface has a fleshy looking patch on his stomach. It looks like is a doctor took a square shape piece of skin off his body. Its healing now but why did that happen?
Can anyone help?

I wish that I would have done this when I first started to get into salt water reefing.

I started this today cause I am in the process of bringing my tank back up. I want to blog about the whole thing to later go back and read and also have some kind of record of what direction I am headed in.

I'm new to the site and look forward to learning much from everyone and to help others avoid the pitfalls I endured while learning from my mistakes. I have a 220 reef to include a massive green haddoni carpet (18 inch diameter) that hosts a breeding pair of clarkiis, (lays eggs roughly every 30 days or so) 4 Tangs(Sailfin, Yellow, Bristletooth Tomini, and Powder Brown), 1 Blue Damsel, 1 Sunrise Dotty, 1 Coral Beauty Angel and 1 Fork Tailed Blenny....as for coral, we have Frogspawn, 2 Hammers, a Trumpet, plenty of Pulsating Xenia, a Flowerpot, a Toadstool Leather, various zooanthids and polypd as well as Green and Red Mushrooms...

I have a Coralife 3X150 MH combined with 4X96 Dual Actinics. In the sump we have a Red Berlin Skimmer and a clone skimmer powered by a Reef Runner 2400, 25 Watt UV Sterilizer, 6 Chemi-Pure on the sump floor, 2400 GPH Mag Drive pushing the water back into the tank.....I use socks for filtration versus bioballs, and a Kalkwasser drip..one drip every 90 seconds or so,,parameters are usually 8.1-8.4, 0 on ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, calcuim 400 or better, alk and DkH around 8.0 and 2.83ish...SG at 1.0235....close enough to natural seawater...oh, and I use Instant Ocean and do water changes about once a month.....30 gallons.....I know I should do more, but it seems to work and have been doing this since the tank was up and running back in July 2005....

We have had our heartaches, too.....coral loss, fish loss, unexplained disappearances, but all in all, a truly rewarding experience! We try our best for our babies and trust ya'll have the same attitude and do the same for your minions!

Happy holidays everyone posting a blog here for the first time as soon as christmas is over and the tree is removed the new 92 gallon corner tank goes in to service. Picked up the tank, stand and sump off of Craigslist. Must say it was a great deal. Purchased a new Protien skimmer for the unit as well and also a outerorbit metal Halide/T5 combo. I will end up with 7.27 watts per gallon strong enough to do most anything in the tank. also just ordered 120 pounds of live sand and I am picking up 115 lbs of live rock. need to scrub the live rock down pretty good it has a covering of Cyano all over it. so i figure a good scrub and i should only have a small spike as far as the cycling goes. not planning on rushing this one bit i iwll keep you all posted. I will tell you there is only one guarenteed fish that is gonig into that and that is a pair of maroon and gold clowns. they were promised to my girl freind. she wants to name one "Goldie" and the other "gopher".
I'm still new to the marine trade, and have probably done the setting up of the tank in the wrong order, so i'm looking for help and advise.

I have an aquamedic 120 bowfront and have added two powerheads, with roughly around 40kg mixed live rock.

livestock consisting of: - paired saddleback clownfish, 1 copperband butterflyfish, 1 coral beauty, 1 blue/green chromis, 1 ocellaris clownfish, 2 regal/hippo tangs, 1 yellow tang, 1 (juv) harlequin sweetlips

2 cerith snails, roughly 15-20 mixed snails, 3 hermits

the tank is now about 6 months old and has had no problems and has had most of it's blooms.

But now i can't seem to keep it clean so i believe it may be blooming again and was wondering if any one could suggest a clean up crew or some way to clean the rock??

cheers

Hi,

I'm considering adding live sand substrate to my established 40 gal. tank.

Should I be considering adding some animals to work the sand?

I currently have one yellow tang and approx. 25 lbs. of live rock. I,m thinking of adding a chromis in the near future.

Thanks,
Rich

Ich

Greetings, I just wanted to share a recent Ich experience with all of you and hope that it helps someone out there. I got my husband a 6 gallon nano tank stocked with your usual possum wrasse, blenny, and goby in addition to nice corals, cleaner shrimp, scallop, hermit crabs, and star fish...well, things were going so well that we decided to get another tank. This tank is a 28 gallon well stocked with live rocks, corals, painted fairy wrasse, flame hawkfish, pink spotted watchmen goby, 3 pajama cardinals, then we got a flame angle. Two days later, noticed ich on the angle but he was happy and eating well, day later noticed ich on fairy wrasse. Well, much to my surprise (out of stupidity) there is ich on all the fishes in my 6 gallon tank! I did remember that the 8 gallon tank temperature did drop to 68 degrees one night so they must have been "sensitized" but the real reason may be that I used the same syringe to feed both tanks. Well, after trying the garlic, and fresh water dips (lasting 4 minutes), the ich continued in this tiny world. I got myself a 6 gallon nano as a hospital tank running with bioballs filled to the max from my LFS to help cycle the new tank. During this week, the ich had all but disappeared in my 28 gallon. I moved the possum wrasse, blenny, and goby from the 6 gallon to the hospital tank, lowered the salinity to 1.012 and increased the temperature to 84 degrees. I did one gallon water changes on the 6 gallon hospital tank each day to get rid of the waste as I was overfeeding them on purpose. For a few days they looked like they were doing better, they were eating and beginning to swim like they used to, I thought we made it. During this time in my 28 gallon, ich reappeared on my flame angle and painted fairy wrasse, I did not want to break down my tank to catch them and put them in my hospital tank and that would have crowded the three that are already there. So I decreased my salinity to 1.021 to the lowest I believed possible for the corals to survive and kept the temperature at 82 degrees. 7 days later, the fishes did not do well in the hospital tank, ich worsened, I did fresh water dips on all three fishes. Not soon after, they each died one day apart. The flame angle and painted fairy wrasse in my 28 gallon continued to eat well and acted fine through all this, even with that "salted" look. They continue to do fine and after doing 4 gallon water changes every day for five days the ich is gone. It has been more than 14 days now and no signs of ich. What I learned from my experience is that:
1) Do not use the same syringe to feed more than one tank, if you do, then rinse them well with fresh water to kill parasites between the tanks. Better yet, don't do it.
2) Keep a steady temperature.
4) Hospital tanks may cause more stress on the sick fish.
4) Probably the most important of things. Keep your water PERFECT! What do they say? An ounce of prevention...
Best wishes!

Finally added a sump to my red sea max!!

Hi guys!

About 10 months ago i was trying to find a way of adding a sump to my max which did not involve a pump in the tank and a pump in the sump as i had heard that getting the feed and returm correct could be tricky and would need to be constantly monitered.
I was quite disapointed to hear this as i was real eager to get a project going on my new hobby. So undetered i did a little research and thought about putting a sump above my max that could be housed in the garage as my max is on the living room on my garage wall. I was even more disapointed that the lfs dimissed my ideas and said it would be a waist of time.
I was so sure that it would work that i drew my plans of the sump down and got it built and then set about linking it to my max dispite the lack of enthusiasm from my fishstore (i was out to prove my point).

So here is how it all works-

my sump is sat on gallows brackets at a level higher than my max on the other side of the wall in my garage.
Water is pulled from my max using a fluval external filter, it is drawn through the filter which houses activated carbon and all my ceramic balls.
It is then pumped through to my chiller and then up into the first chamber of my sump. This first chamber has a red sea prism hanging on as i had it for free and a little less noise coming from my max is much appreciated.
It then flows into the second chamber where i have a little live rock and a planting of calurpra.
It then flows into the last chamber to where i have a small pump that pulls water into my tlc tube that is filled with rowaphos and is then returned back to this last chamber.
The last chamber is drilled in the bottom and has a pipe (which is 9" tall) in which the water flows over and makes its way back into the main tank.
The beauty of this is if there is a power cut, the water will stop flowing over the return pipe so preventing a flood!

Id like to get some pictures of the sump etc on here if anyone is interested but i dont know how to get them up, so any advise would be much appreciated on how to go about doing this :s

I absolutely have to have tang for sure but i will be starting with the live rock and a damsel in a 10 gal and then eventually get at least a 100 gal or whatever is necessary to meet the needs of my inhabitants. Which when i decide what i have to have and what i don't have to have in the means of creatures and reef i will know more

Reefbio fuel to replace Vodka

Just saw this on another forum and I thought it would be nice to share.
Reef BioFuel
Helps maintain a balanced nutrient-limited marine aquarium by enabling the hobbyist to enhance the rate of microbial growth and reproduction, increasing the rate of phosphate-reduction and denitrification; this is of particular benefit in heavily-stocked, well-fed reef aquaria. For $12 I decided to give it a try so I ordered one. I will let you guys know how this works out.

I have 1 foxface, 1 yellow tang, 1 clown, 1 flame hawkfish, 1 coral beauty angal, 2 cleaner shrimp, 1 anemone, 1 sea urchin, and 3 crabs all in a 65gl tank.

About two weeks ago my foxface started getting white spots on its side, all the other fish have no sign of spots. I talked to my LFS and they said it sounded like ick and recomended i use Ick-Attack and soak food in garlic. I used the ick-attack for ten days like the bottle says. My foxface is better, but now the coral beauty and the yellow tang are covered with small white dots with some on the eyes (the spots are a lot smaller than what was on the foxface). The LFS said that i should continue the ich treatment. I have done that but the spots dont change. What i wanting to know is, is this still ick or is it something else more serious. What do i do. :confused1:

My tank is a year old, the fish have been in there about six months. Salinity is at 1.023, temp is 78, pH is 8.3 and the rest is 0ppm

Hi everyone.
Ive been having problems with hair algae.
Nitrite.nitrate levels are good.
I use RO water for water changes and use red sea reef salt.
Lighting is 2 150 watt 20,000K metal halide lamps and one 58watt actinic tube.
Tank size is 6x2x2 feet.
Any suggestions.

Thanks.

Hi This is blueoceans wife, this morning when I got up I turn the bright light on with the blue one. Wow what a surprise. There were alot of tiny critters all over in the tank, but the one I woke my husband to see (he wasn't fast enough) was about 2 or 3 inches long, sqwiggily, dull purpley/blue tip and the body was bright green/blue, very thin like a worm or closed tenticle from an annenome. We were wondering if anybody knows what it is, it obviously only comes out at night and answers greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice. I am very new to saltwater aquariums. I have a couple of 20 gallon tanks an one 10 gallon. I am wondering if the 20 gallon would suffice for a fish-only tank and if a protien skimmer is necessary. I have talked with several associates at large chain stores. I'm pretty sure they know what they are talking about. I have also talked with a couple of guys at a local shop but it seems all they are interested in is selling me 120 gallon tank for about $1200. with so much contridictary information out there I really don't know what to believe. I have read a couple of good books that make sense. Don't know if I can mention the names of them but they are highly recommended and have received excellent reviews. I know I will be limited on the number of fish I will be able to keep in such a small setup, but I am ot going to spend thousands of dollars If I cannot be successful at this. I feel pretty confident If I know I can get good reliable information. Also, would an all-inclusive hood would be accepptable. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I want to get this right the first time.

After going through many DISASTERS (no joke) with our 35 gallon sw tank, we FINALLY got it balanced. we went on vacation for a week, leaving our newly aquired sw tank in the hands of some friends. Besides being highly overstocked (8 FISH!!!), we had a mega-algea bloom. We came back to a mass grave. All the fish were dead, except one. A crazy little Blue Damsel. We got things cleaned up, except one missing fish (which we found later rotted in the sump), and we thought we were good to go. We bought a couple snails, a shrimp, a pair of clowns, and (insanely) a CARPET anenome... in a 35 GALLON TANK!!! Big, big mistake. Our (obviously) honest pet store told us that the 3 inch unidentified anenome would not get any larger than its 3 inch size. Well, they lied; the carpet anenome grew to 8 inches... then died. Wow... another mess. The clowns, which were insanely attached to the anenome refused to eat, and later died. The Blue Damsel made it through, as did the shrimp and snails. Then came algea bloom numger two. OUCH!!! Rotting remains from the one fish we couldn't find after the first algea bloom fed all sorts of nasty algea, and it GREW... and GREW!!! and then my dad got this great idea to BOIL the live rock to get the algea off. I came home one dad to a nasty smell and a steamy pot of... glowing green, completely DEAD rock. "Wow"... i thought... "there goes the tank". Well, my dad learned from his mistakes, but the damage was done. The tank was at the peak of its algea bloom, and now had all this fresh, clean, rock to grow on. And grow it did. We took the rock out and scrubbed it, then set it aside. Obviously everything's dead now... except the brave little Blue Damsel. We then did the biggest water change i would ever risk... actually, even bigger. We left three inches of water to cover the sand plus the sump, and deep cleaned EVERYTHING!!! We let the tank cycle, and started over. Except now we had a clean tank, instead of some nasty, over-used hand-me-down from the neighbors. 3 extra inches of live sand didn't hurt anything. We purchased two new clowns, a six-line wrasse, and a lawnmower blenny. That was great, until we had a three-day weekend which we took advantage of. Our new pet-watcher-people over-fed the fish, and the clowns ate until they exploded. They then rotted and killed the lawnmower blenny and six-line wrasse, leaving that blue damsel alone in his 35-gallon world. We came back, shocked, but ready to clean-up after this not-so-natural disaster. We again purchased two clowns and a lawnmower blenny, along with a host of hermit crabs. They struggled for a while, until the bacteria again covered our rocks (which we just placed back into the tank). After the tank finally became balanced, we bought two long-tentacle anenomes (which promptly died) and a leather coral. The leather coral loves this tank, and the fish are all finally happy. Looks like I might be able to handle a sw tank after all. Just to tell you, it sucks to learn the hard wayt. It cost me thousands of dollars out of my empty pockets to learn.

I awoke this morning to a terrible sight. my 2 year old green spotted puffer had become curious of the power head inlet. He's become stuck once before during a change over and I was there to save him. But last night he wasn't so lucky. He knocked off the prefilter trying to get a piece of krill. And appearently chased it in.....

He was the size a guppy when I bought him, in fresh water. He was 2.5" now. He was like a cat, very playful, curious, he would eat live goldfish from my fingers.

I removed all power heads from my tank and will be replacing them with two Hydor Korelia 3s.

I feel like my dog died.

ok so how's everyone doing? i came across this site, i think it is great. I just started experimenting with saltwater tanks. Ive been a freshie for over 10 years until recently when i bought a 35 hex saltwater set up. The tank is great, i have a lot of live rock. I started with 4 damsels, 2 of which were 3 stripes, the other 2 were blue and yellows. I also have a 65 or 70 gallon tank that i made saltwater. it has been up and running for over a month. My 35 has been up and running for a good 4-5 months. so far so good. My damsels got huge, so i placed them in my bigger tank, since from what i hear they can take harsher water conditions. I got 4 false peliculas for my birthday, that live in my 35, and sad to say, one died a hour ago. i must have had them for a month. I want to put my clowns in my bigger tank, and do something exotic for my 35 gallon, like maybe an eel or lionfish tank. I was told that lionfish need a lot of open water? i have maybe 45lbs of rock in my smaller tank, set up with many coves and hiding spots that my clowns love. in my bigger tank there is alot more open water, as well as rock. what do you guys suggest i do with my tanks? thanks!

35 hex
3 clowns
6 blue/white/red/halloween crabs
1 cleaner shrimp

65/70
some sick ass lighting my dad got. blue led moonlights, uv lights, coral lights
4 damsels only
all live rock, FIJI

i purchased a reef package from saltwaterfish.com for my 65/70 waiting on them to ship it out..

sorry to say i am a newbie to saltwater :icon8:

I do have one question, I have had my tank, 40 gallons, for about 2 years now, the only thing I seem to have problems with is nitrates. Ammonia levels are normal and so are nitrites, as well as phosphates, but the nitrates are off the scale. No matter what I try they stay high, does anyone have any suggestions?
Even doing water changes that are 2/3's the volume o the tank doesn't have any effect.

I have to commend all those who are generous enough to give or even sell cheaply frags, or raised livestock, used equipment or even additives and testers.
I recently have been getting very intrested in corals and it blows my mind the exspense some of them can be, then as I meet others in the hobby I constantly hear " I will frag you some " or " I have a frag I can give you" .
We all like gifts, and free stuff especially when it comes to our hobbies (lord knows they can get out of hand quick). The generosity wont stop with me and I look forward to doing the same with many others. Trading , selling cheaply, and giving away can put less stress on our natural reefs and make a community that doesnt rely on money hungry wholesalers.
HOORAH any who do this and to those like me on the recieving end....pass it on.
