New to Reef Builders

Posted 01-03-2009 at 11:19 AM by pennzo

I'm new to the site and look forward to learning much from everyone and to help others avoid the pitfalls I endured while learning from my mistakes. I have a 220 reef to include a massive green haddoni carpet (18 inch diameter) that hosts a breeding pair of clarkiis, (lays eggs roughly every 30 days or so) 4 Tangs(Sailfin, Yellow, Bristletooth Tomini, and Powder Brown), 1 Blue Damsel, 1 Sunrise Dotty, 1 Coral Beauty Angel and 1 Fork Tailed Blenny....as for coral, we have Frogspawn, 2 Hammers, a Trumpet, plenty of Pulsating Xenia, a Flowerpot, a Toadstool Leather, various zooanthids and polypd as well as Green and Red Mushrooms...

I have a Coralife 3X150 MH combined with 4X96 Dual Actinics. In the sump we have a Red Berlin Skimmer and a clone skimmer powered by a Reef Runner 2400, 25 Watt UV Sterilizer, 6 Chemi-Pure on the sump floor, 2400 GPH Mag Drive pushing the water back into the tank.....I use socks for filtration versus bioballs, and a Kalkwasser drip..one drip every 90 seconds or so,,parameters are usually 8.1-8.4, 0 on ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, calcuim 400 or better, alk and DkH around 8.0 and 2.83ish...SG at 1.0235....close enough to natural seawater...oh, and I use Instant Ocean and do water changes about once a month.....30 gallons.....I know I should do more, but it seems to work and have been doing this since the tank was up and running back in July 2005....

We have had our heartaches, too.....coral loss, fish loss, unexplained disappearances, but all in all, a truly rewarding experience! We try our best for our babies and trust ya'll have the same attitude and do the same for your minions!
