weird growths

Posted 01-22-2008 at 11:52 AM by rarucas
We are a new family to the whole reef tank thing. We've had our tank,55 gal., for about 6 months. I've noticed these new growths on almost all of our live rocks. The only way to describe them is that they look like little chimneys that have these strings coming out of them at night or when the water gets stirred up. Are these bad or good? I assumed they were good, since they are growth that we have not put in there purposely ourselves. Please don't laugh at my ignorance, but I've also noticed these other little creatures when the lights are out, the almost remind me of 'roaches of the water"? Does anyone know anything about these little ugly creatures that live in my corals? Please help, and thanks in advance for your patience!

Well, roaches of saltwater...probably copepods and they make for a tasty and nutritious fish treat.
Chimneys with strings...might want to check out the hitchhiker sticky in the ID forum.

Doctor Paul

I agree with everything they have said up top, but i would not recommend the Madrin just yet. They will usually not take any food that you give and need a established tank to thrive. I recommend that your tank be at least a year old before getting one. I do love the green Madrin myself as well. Welcome to the hobby (addiction)
