Puffer Fish and Powerhead

Posted 01-16-2008 at 10:36 AM by SCOTT WALDROP
Hey folks, I'm pretty much new to the forum. Hopefully someone can give me some insight into a problem I encountered last night. I have a 55 gallon corner tank fully stocked with lots of fish. Because of my high population it's pretty important for me to be running all the requisite "water movers" (skimmer, fluval filter, powerhead etc). Anyway, I brought home a dog puffer aprox 3 inches in size. It integrated quickly and without incident. However, 12 hours into his first day to my horror, I found him sucked into the powerhead’s intake and puffed to the size of a grapefruit. I have not had this problem before with other fish, but this is my first puffer and I'm attributing this incident to his bulbous size. Has anyone had this problem or heard of it? I've got to keep my powerhead running, but right now it's turned off. Your suggestions would be much appreciated! BTW, the powerhead is an "aqua clear" 70. Cheers

you may want to try and find a vented piece that you can attach to the intake of the power head, this will keep him from getting sucked in there again, some of mine have it and some don't, even if, for now you had to glue it in place.

Get a Quick Filter for the AQ power head. It fits most power heads on the market. Run it with out the scrubbing cartridge. It will remedy the problem. If you don't find it I can track down a picture for you.
