Substrate Critters

Posted 10-28-2008 at 12:37 PM by shmato007

Hi,

I'm considering adding live sand substrate to my established 40 gal. tank.

Should I be considering adding some animals to work the sand?

I currently have one yellow tang and approx. 25 lbs. of live rock. I,m thinking of adding a chromis in the near future.

Thanks,
Rich

Depends on what size substrate you may be using? I have always had luck with cerith snails because they "stir" the substrate aerating in the process and clean a tremendous amount of detritus as well as other unwanted alga.

Another good choice that I have always had good luck with is "spaghetti worms" or "ball of yarn worms"; both Timarete and Reteterbella. The worms can reproduce rather rapidly (especially if you pinch of a limb) and a good for scavenging and eating bacteria.

I would consider adding cerith, bumble bee and nassarius snails.
