I purchased a tank, I reverse osmosis'd my water, I purchased good substrate, I purchased over 120 pounds of live rock locally fromn someone getting rid of there existing tank. After 4 days decided I might was well buy a testing kit to see how my cycling was coming along, figuring it would still be in the ammonia stage (based on what I have read). After check the the Ammonia and 0 ppm and checking nitrates at 0 ppm and checking nitrites and falling where they need to be I am totally confused. The rocks have coraline all over them, found a few snails in the tank, seen a few brittle worms, rocks are covered in little tube like transparent feathers and even have a few red things growing on the rock. DO I have to add a dead shrimp to the tank to start the cycling process or has the tank cycled?

| | What probably happened was you already have a cycled tank because of the already cured and matured live rock you got from your friend! I'd say you're doing just fine, I'd still be a little patient though, give it another 3 or 4 weeks before throwing more clean up crew critters in there. Usually, when you start getting algae growth on the glass is a good time to add SOME, not too many! Also, this is the part that I started doing LOTS of research into the fish i wanted to add, and corals! I have a Master List of what will stock my tank at some point and everything is supposed to jive because they all come from the same part of the ocean and are specifically found around all critters on the list. Sounds like you're off to a great start, thank your friend again for that live rock, it took 2-4 weeks off your initial cycle! |
