Clams and Garlic!!!!

Posted 05-21-2008 at 12:45 PM by WhatReef
So i have had this crocea clam for 7 months and just lately my atlantic blue tang hasa come down with some ich but not any of my other fish, i think its cause its a juv fish and i have only had it a few weeks and its slowly going away because i have been feeding the fish twice a day and the night time feeding i use one drop of garlic, so im using 1 drop of garlic per day for 5 days so far and i have done this in the past when my koran and yellow tangs got ich and it worked great and didn't affect my clam now my clam has gone on its side and a hole has formed in its blue skin between is big opening and its lil straw like hole and it was like this for about a weak and i just figured my angel took a bit out of it or something but now i check on it today and its laying on its side and its wide open but it skin is retracted all the way in and the bottom of the clam in like al open and you can see the in side it looks as though its dieing any thoughts on this, i feed it photo on a regular basis as well as kents micro vert but i havnt put any in, in a day or two but i have missed feedings here and theres all the time and it has never had this effect so im just wondering if its the garlic cause my open brain wasn't opening for like a week and now its huge again and my clamm isn't doing well i think its my sand bed causing all my problems i dont think its deep enough its only half ich deep AHHHHHHHHH i know i know thats bad cause my nitrates are 20ppm after a 30 gallon water change in my 110 gallon tank and they seem to just sit around 20 and dont move so im guessing its my sand bed cause i have a corallife 220 needler and a 1260 ehiem filter canister running carbon cause i dont have a proper reef tank YET! oh did i mention i overdosed my tank with calcium its sitting at 800 i know thats bad but everything seems to be doing alright excet for my clam and my sun coral which is fairly new but it does open up sometimes but not nearly as much as id like and im guessing all my problems are related to my sand bed i have lots of flow in my tank its almost a year old so any advice would be good just don't be mean cause i know my sand bed is totally not deep enough and i think that would solve my proplems dont you?

Wow..... ok, won't be mean. Because I am sure you like your tank...as we all do our own.....but have you done any research before buying your items? And that is not a mean comment directed to you- it's just, in your note- you keep saying "I know it's bad I know it's bad..."-but you can change those to GOOD things.
And you say that you are forgetting feedings here and there? I have an idea - and I hope someone here will correct me if I am wrong-
Isn't garlic used as a food enticer? To get some fish to eat? If you are forgetting a feeding here/there, and still doing the garlic-does that act like a 'stimulant' to the tank mates, to where they go in search of picking here and there? Hence the hole in the clam? Like a feeding frenzy? If there is no food, they would resort to what's 'in' the tank.
Can you add some more sand now? To thicken underneath the clam until you get the depth to where you want it?
I myself just purchased a baby crocea- it is (per the store) about 1 yr old. And about 1.5-2 inches. I also have been doing the KENT MARINE zooplex mixed in with my regular feedings, so as not to overfeed the little guy.
What is your lighting situation? Is he getting, or was he getting enough light?
And is he near any corals that might have 'reached out' and stung him?
Is there any way you could send a picture? I'm sure you would get a lot of responses from experienced reefers if they could see a picture- to help you out.
I wish you luck, it's sad to see anything go. Especially after all the work we put into our tanks
