Default Coral toxicity

I have seen many threads on Wetwebmedia, Aquarium, Pond, Marine and Freshwater Fish, reef tanks, and Aquatics Information that allude to toxicity of corals. I am actually interested in learning more about this. Can any of you point me in the right direction on where I can learn a little more?

Danka,
Becky

Becky, I found this forum on coral toxicity while googling.
coral placement reference - Reef Sanctuary
By scrolling down to the sixth post by Tankgirl you will see a very extensive post about Coral Aggression and the top 20 list of most aggressive corals from greatest to least. I found it interesting, hope it helps.
Also the book, Reef Secrets by Nilsen p. 79-81 devotes a section to special compatibility considerations for stocking corals, fish, inverts, etc.

There was an article by Shimek in Aquarium Fish International. He mentioned the falsehood about corals living in harmony in the tank since they do no in nature. It is always a matter of overcrowding and growth.

I'll check out the article you provided.

growing coral and combat. its a very good read. (I am referring to the shimek article becky is talkign about)

In the article, they were talking about stony corals, and how there are a few species have these things called Nematocysts, and when aggitated, they release a "thread" that shoots out at 40,000, thats right, 40,000 G's. that would be equivelent to 40,000 you's on top of you.

basically, it shoots out at about 500 times the speed of a bullet.

the thread whcih is shorter than in inch, comes out so fast it punches a hole right in the exoskeleton of the neighboring coral and releases its toxin into that hole.

Absolutely amazing!

Speaking of great reading. I was just wondering what books everyone has really found to be valuable. I just got done reading two of the basic books and after the poker win a few nights ago am in the market for a few more. Any suggestions?
