Default destroyed mushrooms...

i am bummed...i tried to frag some shrooms last weekend....i diced up a couple, placed them into a container with some rubble rock, covered it with some wedding veil, and set it into the tank. i finally took it out yesterday and all but 1 piece of shroom was left that had attached to a rock. everything else had disinegrated....so i ended up destroying one of my green shrooms. i wonder if i chopped them up too small or didnt get enough of the mouth on it.

oh well, i was getting tired of looking at that container in the tank anyhow.

I don't even purposely frag shrooms. Most of the time, I won't like where they are in the tank...go to move them and end up losing a chunk of the base and then all of a sudden there is another shroom. The green striped...forget it, they crap a new mushroom at least once a week. I keep finding their kin all over the place.
What might help, before undertaking the process is to test your water. Yes, test the water. Corals undergo wicked stress after being chopped on. I can see hardship if the parameters are way off.

thanks becky. you know though...i dont see my mushrooms really multiplying at all. they may eventually seperate from the rock they are on and move to another spot but they dont really propogate, why is that? which chemical level in the tank helps this process to happen?

about the only thing in the tank that is spreading are the yellow polyps and i do not even touch them.

My green striped shrooms reproduce like crazy. The red ones with blue dots not as much. Then I have a few red and purple ones that don't do squat.

I also have the green stripe and they are out of control. They are on all ends of the tank and mulitplying at least 2 a week! I try to frag a goo bunch of them once a month, but it hasnt really helped too much except now I have to give them to my friends and they dont want them anymore either lol.

if your mushrooms are not multiplying, then something is wrong. have you checked calcium and magnesium lately?

shrooms wouldnt need calcium as much as sps or lps. I would check your nitrates trites and ammonia, PH and temp.

I havent had mcuh success fragging mushrroms either but after a few months my red mushrooms are starting to multiple. I say just give them some time as long as the water is good

If your mushrooms are leting go of the rocks, that is the way they move around if they don't like where they are placed. It could be to much or not enough light, some other coral could be stinging them, or your levels could be all crazy. mushrooms seem to like an aquarium that is nutrient rich so to much skimming could be a problem. Try moving them closer or farther from the light to see if they stop getting loose.

Next time you try fragmenting a mushroom do it after they are looking as good as posible. Let them start buding be themself and them you can fragment the shroom.

from what I have been told is to put a rubber band through the center and rap it around the rock that it is on, just enough pressure to compress the shroom, you don't want it to cut into it at all. I have a friend that has been doing this for a long time, it has worked out well for him

Every person that fraggs has to lose a few things once in a while right. Thats how we become better reefers. At least you have more than 1 right.

What if you have a ton of them & want to get them off the rock? Can you slice the base & move the whole shroom to a plug?

If you cut them then besure you have some of the mouth and then glue them to a frag plug and place in an area they responde to. Covering them and restricting there flow is bad. They will be stressed and will need proper conditions to heal.

But there regrowth isnt much faster then if they mulitiply normaly.
