Default Toothpick attachment

Has anyone tried using a toothpick to attach a mushroom? I recently tried it with no success. I put the toothpick threw the base of the mushroom and stuck it in a hole on a piece of live rock. It was fine for a couple of days, but eventually it just detached itself and I found it laying on the sand.
