Default Tank Stand Idea

Hello everyone. This is my first post here and I thought I'd run a tank stand design by everyone. Here it is.

Basically I'd add a couple large doors to the front and attach them directly to the pillars. I would set the tank directly onto the 2x4's. I would think that the 6 4x6 pillars would be plenty to support it. All the stand designs I see online have 2x4s on end and use nothing but 2x4s. Would the fact that these 2x4s are laying flat cause problems? I will also use some wood glue for some trim around the top and bottom to make it look more presentable, but I want to know if anyone think I should add anything.

It's for a 60 gallon tank.

Looks like a good idea to me. I used a similar design when I made a stand for my 55g. The 2X4s laying flat shouldn't cause any problems. Also those 4X6 pillars should be plenty of support. Make sure you seal the wood because your bound to spill some water on it.

The 4x6's would be way stronger than you need. Standard 2x4's is enough, especially if you nail two together on each of the corners. The two things that I don't think are ideal in your design is the center brace between the doors and having the 2x4's laying flat. First off, having the center brace can be a pain with adding and removing equipment from within the sump and doing maintenance, but unless the stand is tall enough to allow room for a wider upper support beam, you may not be able to get rid of it. The second thing, with having the 2x4 laying flat seems much more critical. I would not lay the 2x4 flat without having something vertical underneath it. There is a reason why stands have the 2x4 laying on end. A 2x4 can easily flex when laying flat. Having the 2x4 laying on end is much stronger for holding the weight of the water up.
