Default Drilling Glass

Does anyone know if it's common for the manufacturer to temper the bottom of a tank but not the sides? I want to punch a hole in the side of my 55 gal refugium which is just a regular glass aquarium. There is a sticker on the bottom just like in my 135 that says "Tempered" Does that mean the whole thing is tempered or just the bottom?

Its common for the bottom to be tempered but not the sides. If the sticker was on the bottom I would think the bottom is tempered but not the sides.I've never personally seen or heard of a 55 having tempered sides.

Be careful! I was doing a similar search for information on drilling aquariums. Marineland (Perfecto) has a document on their website that specifies which panels (if any) of their aquariums are tempered. Their 55G has all panels tempered! I am not sure what brand you have. I looked on Aqueon's website (All Glass Aquariums) and couldn't find a similar document.

Here is a shortcut to the PDF file posted on the Marineland website
