Default DIY rimless tank?

It's a tad bit off topic for a reef forum. Pretend its a mangrove tank, LOL. But, my GF will soon be upgrading to a 40g breeder for her turtles, I've read that rimless tanks use thicker glass but since it will only be about half full, if I would be okay pulling the upper rim off a normal tank? I've seen it done on 10g nano's. Input?

Not a good idea, but if you do decide to do it, keep us posted.

Remember the top rim provides reinforcement to the tank, each gallon of water weighs 9 pounds....

I wouldn't do it, silicone isn't load rated and theres not much area to dissipate the 170 or so pounds of force 20 gallons of water will create. In my expirience rimless tanks are acrylis so there in effect one solid piece of material, as opposed to five held together with silicone.
