Icon7 DIY Seaclone Skimmer mod

Alright, so i started a thread earlier about choosing between doing a sump or a skimmer. Me and my father decided to go with the skimmer idea. We tried to put a SeaClone 100 skimmer onto our 29 gallon tank with an Eclipse 2 hood but we just couldn't figure out how to do it with the hood in the way so we returned it. Finally, months later we came up with a gameplan and purchased another one.

The SeaClone 100 we purchased, and our christmas tree in the background.

Some of the various tools and peices we used.

First we had to drag the tank out inorder to work on it and such. We were limited to which skimmer we could use for this reason.

Inorder to mod the skimmer to fit into the top we used three quarter inch flexible hose to make the line from the pump to the skimmer longer. We had to use black because they were out of clear at Home Depot.

We clamped the tube to the plastic peices using heaterhose clamps and put silicone spray on all the o-rings in the skimmers tubes.

We used a Dremel 400 XPR to cuttout slots in the top to run our wires and hoses which caused us to take the whole top off of the tank. This needed to be done inorder to get the skimmer to fit into the tank. Before returning the top to the tank we cleaned all the crept off the back wall, the powerheads, and such.

Getting the pump into the tank was sort of a challenge because we had to go up and over stuff but we finally got it in there.

We replaced the suction cups that hold the pump to the glass with a Suregrip 50.

This is everything put together on the back of the tank.

We had to get a longer airhose for the skimmer. I'm guessing its about 5 feet long.

One of our more important changes was mounting our outlet strip onto the wall instead of laying it under the tank so there was a driploop on all the wires.

Everything plugged in!

The skimmer in action!

Finally, we returned the tank back to its normal position, cleaned the glass, and added water

One of the more challenging things to do is to move the tank when its filled all the way up with water. So i waited untill the water was down about and inch to move it out. So hopefully this skimmer will help keep my tank healthy. If theres any questions you have feel free to post them and I will do my best to answer them because I know im not good at explaining things like this, I hope i got the general idea out though.

Thanks,
Dan & John

Well you did a great job! but the sea clone is about rock bottom, when it comes to skimmers. They have really poor performance and the 5ft of hose you added just killed what little it had. just my 2.You might want to look into a new skimmer soon!!!

better yet! lose the pump. Save it, maxijet's are great, and add a wooden airstone in there it will skim 10 times better.
