I've given it a thought, being a do-it-yourself fellow but I don't have experience with glass. Would be a nice project though.

I wouldn't mind trying to build an aquarium and stand from scratch, but I am not sure exactly how to go about doing it right now in my current living situation, but I am still contemplating it. I will let you know if I do decide to do it!

Default 300 Gal

I have made 2 aquariums
first one was a 120 Gal and used as a freshawater aquarium
now I built a 300 gal Reef tank
My adbice is plan, draw it, Verify, Have glass cut to your drawings. Make sure glass pieces are to exsact measurements to fit together
But most important of all is patience.
do not rush any phase and make sure all adhesives are given ample time to cure.
I can give sugjestions if needed.
I need help is on how to keep my corals healthy
picrures are under WWW,foundreef,com
How do I post pictures?

not at all but you can't get a 300 custom built for anywhere near 800 dollars
Someday I will figure out how to post pictures and you tell me

Is there a special type of glass involved if you are going to build you own tank? What is it you use to hold the pieces of glass together? Do you think the home-made aquarium will be as sturdy as the store bought asquariums?

You would probably want to use 1/2" glass for 300 gallons, and temper the bottom panel. They make a uv silicon that bonds well to glass.

I've always wondered if it was cost effective to build your own tank. What about building one using acrylic? Any ideas on that?

I think this would be a great project, just make sure you add the middle peice to the top of tank, this will not allow the tank to shift in any direction when you are moving it. simply put it is a brace, I would look at other tank's the size you want to build and get the measurement from that. the frame of the tank is not needed, but it will hide your seam's, and make the tank look alot nicer.
