Default Quarantine tank.

Hey I am going to start my quarantine tank soon, but I was wondering....Could I just have a 10 gallon tank ready in the closet and when I need a 10 gallon quarantine tank could I just put it on a stand and use 10 gallons from my display tank? Wouldn't that be using the beneficial water and then add an airstone and a powerhead for tank movement and a big pvc pipe for shelter. Wouldn't that work for a qt tank also that would keep the parameters the exact same as my display tank right?

You could do that but you still have to worry about keeping the temperature constant so you have that to worry about. Also to consider is would you have 10 gallons of saltwater ready to go to replace what you took out.

So if I put a heater in there and have 10 gallons of water ready everything should be great correct?

Should be. Only other thing you might want to do is have a sponge filter populated with bacteria from your main tank. That will help with waste conversion when you put the sick fish in the quarantine tank. Remember you won't have any LR to convert the waste from the fish.

This is a sponge filter: Dual Action Foam Filters | Sponge Filters | Filters | Aquarium - ThatPetPlace.com
This type you could put on your powerhead: Filter Max III Sponge Pre-Filters | Sponge Filters | Filters | Aquarium - ThatPetPlace.com

Finally getting around to making my quarantine tank....How long do you need to put the pre-filters that fit over a powerhead in your display tank to make sure it gets the needed backteria? Can I just put it in my sump? Or maybe in my filter sock?

Thanks!

Dan

They'll populate with some bacteria in a few days. If you have lr in the sump you can put them there. Wouldn't put them in the filter sock since you'll be putting a lot of junk in them.

Good point. Ok I will just hide it behind my rock and leave it for a week or so.

Thanks,

Dan

Also I am thinking about buying a anenome with a clownfish that is already hosting it. Should I put both into quarantine at the same time, Would the anenome be ok without much light, etc. I don't want to split them up for fear that the clown would not host it once they met back up.

Thanks
Dan

once a clown has hosted it will usually host again and anenomes do not do well without their lighting needs.

That is very true, maybe I will just risk the clown being ok and put them both directly in the display tank...I dont know what I will do yet..

They do make a sort of profolactic for the fish\tank, its an antibiotic for most fish, but def. for Clowns my lfs said they are more susepable to parasites and the chemicals help with that. I believe it is 1 ounce for every 10 gal.
