Rdo,

Your bio-wheel is a biological filter. Wha do you have in place to do biological filtration after you remove it? If you dont have live rock or an undergravel your fish tank will turn into ammonia soup in about 3 days.

Bio-wheels have a tendency to become nitrate factories if not constantly cleaned. UG filter is definitely a no-no. They suck all the detritus into the substrate where it becomes a nitrate factory.
Rdo, you can take the wheel off & fill the the filter with floss, carbon bag, etc for mechanical, chemical filtration if you like. Important thing to remember is that if you don't keep the substrate clean you will generate nitrates. You could also fill the filter with LR rubble for additional biological filtration.
