Default Someone Listed A Pic Of Ge Silicone/glue That Was Fish Safe.............

I know that someone listed some photos of some GE brand silicone/glue, Ive been searching and cant find that thread,I noticed some in the local hardware store and tryed to figure out which one but didnt want to be wrong. If some one knows what type it was or what thread it was Iwould be grateful.

Also what is good & safe to glue PVC pipe together? is plumbers glue & primer out of the question?

To the best of my knowledge NONE of the regular GE silicones are aquarium safe. The only ones that are will specifically have it on the tube.

GE silicone I "window and door" is aquarium safe. (there is another silicone 1 that wont work)

Its been used by many. I've used it a few times myself, my 90g sump used it and other projects I have done, I used it with, as well as some local folks who turned me on to it.

Here's the pic of it : (ONLY this blue label GE I Window and Door, its cannot have mold inhibators at all, or you will have DEATH in your tank, so please be sure, I cant be held accountable)

Keith - do they recommend it for constant submersion? I thought they had some warning on the tube to that effect.

From what I was told its fine, there's posts about it over on Reef Central where many used it and many wont use it. Some people love it, others wont touch it.

I can say my 90's been up for a while, my 20long sump for that tank, used the GE I in the picture, my tank grows everything with no issues or known/noticeable effects.

Personally, I have a brand new tube of this and Tube of the AGA brand clear and black stuff.. I keep em all just in case I need it...

I just did a 10 gallon sump last week, I used the GE I Silicone

From the GE FAQ page:
Can I use silicone in my pool, whirlpool bath or boat?
We do not recommend any silicone for any constant underwater use because over time the silicone bond to the substrate can fail.
Here's the page:

My sump's been holding up well for a year now, totally under water.

I think it'd fail if under extreme pressure over time, not under light duty use though.

I have my baffles stuffed with rubble rock too, the baffles are bowed from the pressure, still holding nice

Just use caution when using it, thats all.

The AGA silicone would most likely be a better choice...

I just bought a silicone from Lowes that says aquarium silicone as its label...So if it was me I'd go to a local Lowes and pick one up...around 3-4 dollars for a tube and it looks like I'll use three tubes doing my 20 gallon sump/refugium...

I have yet to see any silicone in a tube that says 100% silicone and did not say that it had algaecides or mold resistant on it that wasn't safe. If you used 100% silicone, you should be fine. If you're worried about it, you can remove the silicone with a razor blade and reseal it with aquarium grade silicone. IMO, The main (if not only) difference between the two is the cost.

I saw some at Pet Supplies Plus yesterday. It was a little overprices but it came in a small tube and said AGA on it, so I am assuming that would be safe to use.

I don't know of any pet stores that sell non-aquarium grade silicone so I'm sure it's fine as long as it says 100% silicone.

BTW - Here's a couple quotes from Bob Fenner regarding silicone

Quote:
And 100% silicone is ah, 100% silicone... ummm, they're all the same... no, really, I'm not joking... Just watch out for the non-100% ones that have mildewcides, et al... in them...
Quote:
It "is" only 100% silicone sealant, designated for aquariums or not. What you want to avoid is any/everything other than 100% silicone (some formulations add mildewcides for instance for window, tub caulk use...)(Color? I would use the "Clear".).
