Default 55g Sump

Ok I need to build a sump because I have a odd tank stand that only allows for a depth of 11". So my question is, since I do not have alot of tools can I make a sump out of a 10g tank or would that be just to small for a 55g? Any suggestions would be great thanks.

I know about Melevsreef.com - Welcome! But I dont have the tools to make a sump totally out of acrylic, so I need a shell to start with.

You could use the 10 if you wanted to but trying to hide a lot of equipment in there will be tough. I'd go with a 20 long. You should be able to pick up a used one relatively cheap.

2og longs are still 12" wide though, so that does not fit still. what about 2 10g tide in together some how?

I needed a custum sized Sump/Refugium also. What I ended up doing was make my own. But like you I could not cut it (I'm disabled) I ended up having the local glass shop cut it for me. Thay only charged me $35.00 Which I thought was a real good deal. Then I done the glue up. It took me several days but I'm real happy with it. You might want to make a cut list first and get some prices first I'm shure all shop are not as cheap as the one I used. If you dont want to go that rout could you maby use 2 10 gal tanks or mabe 1 5gal and a 10gal and set the 5 higher and let it flow over to the 10. I'm thinking you need more then 10gal but I gess some is better then none. The HOB's you see for sale are not even 10gal. Good luck how ever you decide to go.

The larger the sump the better. Ideally you want all of your equipment to hide in it and have it large enough so that you have enough space in it so that when the power goes off and some water gets siphoned back down into your sump, the sump won't overflow. The larger water volume also means that your setup can support more fish. Tying two 10 gal tanks together using bulkheads isn't ideal, but would be better than 1-10 gal tank, although a 10 gal sump is better than no sump.

You could let the tank hang out over the edge a bit - 1 inch won't be that critical.
e_baer glued a couple 10's together. We're waiting to see how long it will be before they come apart. I wouldn't trust that.

lol, no i wouldnt trust it either. I had the same problem as you. a 55g with 10.75 inches of room. I like the idea of 2-10's together cuz it hardly cost a penny, but silocon sealant isnt that strong. I know there is stronger stuff out there, but at the time, i didnt know.

here is the link.

I just put a 10 gallon for my 55g as my sump/refugium. Although i already had a HOB aquaC remora (AWESOME skimmer by the way.) so I just hung that on the short side. it definetly helps with space, i would have used my 20L, but there isnt enough room in my stand ( i built it with a 3x3 support post in the middle).
