Default DIY intank overflow

Eveyone has a box type over flow in the center or in the corners of there tank, I want to use a 90 pvc elbow pointed up with a screen Ive only seen tanks done like this at LFS I fugure main reason they dont have the box is the fact they would need so many of them "high cost". If the 90 went out the back to a "T" for a vent & drain. Using a sock before it drains to the sump.

With the 90 pointed up behind the trim work the water would have to rise up to flow over and down in to it, Basicly skiming the surface, would this be ideal way of doing this or do I need that internal over flow box?
