You don't say what size tank. But I would think the tank builder would not have used a 2" if it was not right. But some of the experts my tell you better then me. I still real new my self.

depends on how much return flow you put to tank

for example 2 in pipe will move same water as 4 1 in pipes

but i would say you can put one hell of a return pump on it

Agree. It all depends on how much flow you're planning on having go through your overflow.

A 2 inch drain will carry away 2400 gallons per hour.

So that means if you have 2400gph going into a sump/fuge, you will need that much flow coming back into the tank. That will take one hefty pump!

It means you could use that much if you wanted to.If youe a 600 gph then thats all you get.He must have at least a 300 gallon tank.

I would imagine, unless the person before him had all the flow coming form the overflows and return pump. Even then it would have to be a 180 or so.

Since one of the most imprtant reasons for an overflow is to skim the surface of the water. I would think more smaller ones in a lrage tank( longer) would be a better idea.Like anything 48 inch's and longer should have two,72 inch's and longer should have 3.

Heres a pic of my overflow, 1.5in bulkhead, the inside surface skimmer is 2in diameter reduced at the elbow. This overflow handles a LOT of water, but is significantly noisier than I had hoped for.

I used the "Sanitary" tees and elbows for a smoother turn than standard 90degree elbow, disadvantage to them is they have a shallower socket for the pipe so I went very heavy on the pvc glue, I also used the grey plastic plumbing strap to support the drain (visible at very bottom of picture).

David that looks good, you do know there are several tricks to quieting an overflow right? One is putting a 12inch piece of plastic, airline sized tubing down, having only about 1 inch stick up out of the top of the overflow and the rest down below.

I did that on my overflow and it make it much quieter.

Another thing you can do is:

Instead of having the pipe go straight down, have the pipe angle 45 degrees so the water is not falling as far.
