Default DIY "HOB" Refugium

Ok so this will be my first real DIY project for the tank....im excited. The idea is instead of using an aquaclear 500 to get a small HOB refugium, cut up another powerfilter i have lying around so that i just have the pump really to take water into my acrylic version of that project. The input water would go into the skimmer chamber, which would empty into the same chamber and go over one baffle, under another and over the last into the refugium section. This would then empty into the return section which would simply overflow back into the tank. Its 5 inches deep, and noted on the drawings it is 30" wide and 16" tall. My first drawing is what i came up with originally at 300 am while at work...lol. The second is what ive changed from some input.

I think that is a super idea. If you have not patented it yet I think I will copy it. Only in menarche for my 1/2 gal tank

Yea its sorta HOB. I figured with the weight of ten gallons, Ill just make it tall enough to sit on its own. So itll be like a HOB only itll go all the way to the stand. I should get started on it after the holidays. Ill keep this thread going as a build thread. The reason im doing it this way is because im Crazy limited with space in here. I actuall have a sump i got for free from someone, or tanks i could turn into a sump/refugium. Just no space. So Im going to give this a try. Plus i love this stuff and working with my hands so ill have fun doing it.

well we use lucite acrylic as our plexi glass at my store. so im gonna use that. I wont have to pay anything for it so even if i mess up, oh well. Most of it will come out of scrap except for the two pieces that would be 16 x 30

No just a lousy speller that did not prof read. Try inserting miniature or how about a smaller version. I is aggravating to know what you want to say and not how to spell it. I guess I should invest in a dictionary. In any event I have started to make plans for a small one. I just had not thought of modifying a HOB filter and did not want a submersible pump ( they are ugly and make to much heat )

There are plans for changing aquaclear filters into a HOB refugium. Its pretty simple. I think i saw it in reefcentral.com DIY forum.

are you really doing a Half gallon? What would you put in it?

It's that damn Discovery Health channel screwing with his vocabulary again.
One more time, Ed, and I will have to issue an infraction! lol

I have a 1/2 gal tank up and ruining. I just think that adding your HOB idea will help me with keeping the water parameters on the good side. You can see my little tank here.

well ive scrapped this idea. I tried a plastic welder from my store and it did not hold. At this point my synapses started fired in all kinds of ways and i ended up building a sump out of a 20 H tank. It fits well in my limited space and itll increase my water capacity alot more. Plus i get to play more. I love these projects. Its fun to me.

Ops !! I just assumed you knew that you need to use Weld-On #4 to glue acrylic. It is not hard you just need the right stuff. I still have not made a small one for my 1/2 gal tank. But the 20 gal sump I made came out nice. If you decide to give it another shot check out this site for some good pointers.
