Default DIY overflow

I am in the process of making my own overflow that will be inside the tank. Right now I have a mock up of one that goes from the near the top of the tank to the bottom of the tank. I made this one so that I could drill the hole for the bulkhead through the bottom of the tank. I have also seen one that was only a small box near the top of the tank. Aside from the issue of space being used is there any difference in the functionality between the two. I have seen some people comment on the look of the small overflow compaired to the larger top to bottom overflow. If there is no difference I quess it comes down to the look as I dont want to see alot of bulkheads coming thru the back of my tank. One more question I was planning on centering the overflow in my tank but have seen alot of them in the corner, being that I have not crafted the final overflow I could change my plan to make one in the corner. The most important thing to me is that I have good water flow into the overflow from all directions.

Anyone have thoughts on this issue?

Nate

have you seen the calfo style overflow? I plan to have 2 1.5" holes in rear of each corner with pvc pipe running entire length of tank with slits cut in top side for a total of atleast 40" of skimming surface. sanding down the pvc pipe it will be covered in purple coraline algae within a few months so they wont be that bad.

No I have not seen that but I think I understand the concept. Interesting idea. If you get it done in the near future if you could post some pics I would really like that.
Thanks for the idea.

I think this is where I got the ideal, this is a pic from a linked thread called plywood frag tank in krazys post your prop tank pic orsomething like that

I plan to do something pretty close to this, It wont take me long to get it done I plan to take video of the tank being drilled & pics of it all for my build thread. So I will post a link to it here.

Thanks for the pic. Does it say how well it works in the post? That is one I may have to give some thought to.

Here is mine, carrys a huge flow(1.5in bulkhead) but its noisier than I wanted.

Ive seen one like the above with only a single drain too, drain at one end, cap at the other and series of holes in long pipe, with the pipe supported by the center brace by zipties.
