Icon13 Husband's DIY is rusting

Hi, I'm new here, and I'm not sure I am posting this in the right spot...
OK, so my husband decided to be cheap and since he is a welder, he made his own hood for the lights. After almost 2 years, it's falling apart, and rust is falling into the water. All of our coral, the exception of 2, have died. All that we have left is 1 clown, 2 saltwater cats, a clam, and 2 featherdusters. All of our shrimps and crabs are dead too.
Could this be caused by rust? My husband doesn't think so, but I do- and everything else in the tank is testing fine.

that's a good possibilty I know you should not use metal in the tank.

I'm guessing that a new light fixture and a hefty water change is in store for you. The sooner the better.

I'm guessing more than just a bit of rust has fallen in the tank. Rust is basically just iron which many people dose to their tanks. A few small bits of rust most likely wouldnt cause much more than an algae bloom. How was the metal treated, was it galvanized, painted, something else?

Depending on the composition of the brazing sticks, flux, base metals, etc., it sounds like there's a major contamination problem. Remember, the solution to polution is dilution!!! (and a new light fixture) LOL
